Project Title: BAC Key Product Company Name: Vehicular Assurance Rene G. Diaz & Oscar Sedano-Gutierrez United High School 2nd Block 1/12/16 r

Problem Statement & Design Goal Problem Statement: People driving while intoxicated is a serious issue for public and driver safety. A large number of driving fatalities happen as a direct cause of alcohol. o

Problem Statement & Design Goal Design Goal: Design and develop a product meant to bring safety into the hands of drivers by disabling them turning on their car on if the device detects that the driver is too intoxicated to drive safely. r

Features/Criteria Ease of Use Safety Price Comfort Portability r

Deliverables Design Proposal Block Diagram AutoCAD Sketches PowerPoint Presentation Final Report r

Background Research & Investigation Questions to Consider How do we detect the alcohol level of a person? How will our device be able to communicate with the car? How much will the product weigh? What materials will the product be made out of? What are some existing solutions? o

Background Research & Investigation Existing Solutions: SCRAM anklet Fuel cell technology Court appointed Measures BAC Periodically o

Background Research & Investigation Car Breathalyzer Uses random checks Requires blowing into the device Reportedly, very faulty r

Background Research & Investigation BAC Detection Detection pads that register alcohol consumption in the form of electrical current would be implemented into a key Car Communication A chip would be installed in the car that communicates using NFCs to either allow or disable the engine to be turned on to another NFC set inside the key device Product Weight Product must be light and easy to carry A set of car keys is approximately 3.5 ounces, or 0.2 pounds Product Materials The key would be made of brass aluminum alloy The head of the key could be made out of polymer, ensuring a cheap production cost r

Background Research & Investigation Lessons Learned It is entirely possible to implement our own features from existing solutions into our own A key is expected to be pocket- sized and lightweight Grooves should be on the sides of the key for an easier grip r

Possible Solutions Solution 1: BAC Key Transmitter chip inside of the key Uses detection pads to analyze the BAC of a person Key transmits a signal to a chip in the car’s engine via NFC (Near Field Communication Signal locks the car door if the user’s BAC is too high o

o

Possible Solutions Solution 2: Watch Detector Smart watch that detects BAC automatically at a Constant rate Alerts the user if their BAC is about the legal Limit to drive Screen on the watch displays all information that Needs to be shown to the user o

o

Possible Solutions Solution 3: Door Monitor Monitor that is placed on the entrances to bars People that leave the bar are required to scan Their thumb on the smaller screen The monitor determines the user’s BAC and Displays the level on the larger screen Plays an alarm to alert the owners of the bar if the user’s BAC level is over the legal limit r

r

Choosing the Best Solution Solution A, the BAC Key, gained the most points in the decision matrix Criteria weighted by importance r

Project Timeline Timeline used to keep track of deadlines, milestones, and tasks Essential for better organization o

Development Work Major Design Decisions Roadblocks & Setback The device could be simplified in terms of technology Rather than having three lights, the product only Needs one light to show all three of The indicator colors, depending on the situation Roadblocks & Setback Encountered the issue of aesthetics Figuring out how to detect BAC without breathing o

Development Work Final Product the end result of our product turned out more effective and appealing than the initial ideas for the product Block Diagram r

Evaluation The BAC key gained the most points total criteria. But, the product also does not have the most advanced components, and the shape of the key is not the most appealing. The criteria that would require field testing are ease of use, comfort, and portability. Price and safety would be analyzed through lab testing. o

Recommendations & Future Work The next step in producing the product is to improve its features and make it even easier to use. To get our product manufactured, we would need to get hired be a car company so we could implement our security system in that company’s mass produced cars. Changes to our approach include spending more time into researching the different ways that BAC could be detected, and understand the mechanics of cars in greater depth. r
