Honors & Advanced Placement Informational Session 2017 Welcome Honors & Advanced Placement Informational Session 2017

What is Advanced Placement? Honors (Pre-AP) Courses prepare students for AP level courses. AP courses are college-level courses taken in high school AP exams are taken to potentially earn college credit score range is 1-5 4 or 5 = credit at most colleges / universities 3 = some colleges / universities award credit for specified areas

What is Advanced Placement? EXAMPLES AP Statistics at ASU Score a 3, 4, or 5 and receive credit for STP 226, 3 college credits AP US History at ASU Score a 4 or 5 and receive credit for HIST 109 and 110, 6 college credits AP Chemistry at ASU Score a 4 and receive credit for CHEM 113, 4 college credits Score a 5 and receive credit for CHEM 113 and 116, 8 college credits (subject to change based on year and school)

The Honors & AP Experience Challenging course work Upper level and college equivalent work Increased work load Work ethic is as important as intelligence It’s normal for students to struggle initially Students will work harder to earn an A or B

The Payoff! AP students are more likely to be successful in college Students who complete AP courses and exams are more likely to complete a college degree on time Only one in four students who enter college complete a bachelor’s degree in four years (IPEDS database, 2008) “One of the best standard predictors of academic success at Harvard is performance on Advanced Placement Examinations.” —William Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions & Financial Aid, Harvard University * Of the remaining 73% of students who do not complete a bachelor’s degree in four years, approximately 25% earn a bachelor’s degree in 5 or 6 years, approximately 25% drop out or take more than 6 years to earn a bachelor’s degree, and approximately 23% transfer to another college or university, with typically lower graduation rates than students who do not transfer.

The Payoff! Saves Time and Money Earn college credit while still in high school Skip Introductory Classes: If you already know your preferred college major, taking a related AP course and earning a qualifying score on the AP Exam can help you advance and avoid required introductory courses – so you can move directly into upper-level classes and focus on the work that interests you most. Increase Scholarship Opportunities Specific scholarships for Honors and AP students 31% of colleges and universities consider a student’s AP experience when making decisions about which students will receive scholarships.* Having the AP Exam score can make the difference when it comes down to awarding precious scholarship dollars —Edwina Harris Hamby, former Dean of Admission, Fisk University

AP Data Over the past five years, CVHS has had an overall AP average score in the 3.1-3.4 range, while the state average has been in the 2.8-3.0 range. Calculus AB average score Calculus BC average score Campo State 4.017 2.78 4.5 3.6 Percent of seniors scoring 3 or higher on at least one AP Exam in high school 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 15.8% 22.4% 25.4% 25.3% 31.4% Number of seniors earning an AP Scholar award* 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 18 36 63 54 64 *AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor, AP Scholar with Distinction, National AP Scholar

AP vs. Dual Enrollment Dual Enrollment Advanced Placement Description Dual Credit allows high school students to potentially earn both high school and college credit by completing courses at their high school. The AP Program allows students to take college-level courses and exams, and to potentially earn college credit or placement while still in high school. Transferability All in-state and several other public institutions; may not be accepted by selective out of state universities. Accepted by most institutions, public and private, both in and out-of-state. Very few exceptions. How Transferred Through a CGCC transcript. As a score (1 through 5) with 5 and 4 being most readily accepted, 3 may be accepted and 2 and 1 are not accepted. How Grade or Score is Assigned Dual Credit grade is the same grade as high school grade. Student will receive a high school grade, but transferability is based on a single, national exam administered in May. Class grade has nothing to do with test score. Cost $86/credit hour plus a $15 registration fee per semester. $97.00 per exam
