Annual Professional Development Conference - 2016 Wednesday 24 August Professional Judgement Kim Tree

Professional Judgement

Assessment Decisions An everyday occurrence Some straightforward Some more complex Easy to make decisions where candidates present really good or really poor submissions. Borderline decisions need more thought.

Who is involved in making assessment judgements? Assessors Colleagues Internal Verifiers Tutors.

Applying Professional Judgement STEP 1 Review the requirements of the Unit Specification closely. Look very closely at the Evidence Requirements. This tells you EXACTLY what the candidate is required to show in terms of evidence of their knowledge and skills.

Any Unit Outcome 1 Evidence requirements Prepare management information in graphical form to show results of regional sales Candidates will need to provide evidence to demonstrate their Knowledge and/or Skills by showing that they can: regional sales must be shown for 5 areas proportions of the whole must be shown for each area prepare a brief description of the chosen chart type Evidence should be generated under supervised conditions using a recognised computer software package.

Practical Workshop You have scripts to review Look back at the unit specification extract and the marking guidance. Has the candidate done enough to complete the outcome successfully.

Candidate 1 Submission Column, bar, and pie charts compare values in a single category, such as the number of products sold by each salesperson. Pie charts show each category’s value as a percentage of the whole. PARTICIPANT UNITS SOLD ‘000 NORTH 11 East 15 West 9 South 14 Rest of world 21

Candidate 2 Submission

Applying Professional Judgement STEP 2 With Accounting units we use Error Tolerance, but the procedure is the same for cut off scores or Grades. Its easier to check what they have not done sometimes. Identify if the candidate has demonstrated to you, in YOUR OPINION, that they understand what they have been asked to do and have completed it.

Applying Professional Judgement STEP 3 Look at the marking guidance in the unit specification or the exemplar. In some of the assessment packs you are given guidance on what is a Grade C submission and what is a Grade A, or other similar guidance. Look back at what you did in previous years. Good practice is to retain good, bad and average papers as part of your IV system to ensure consistency across assessors and across the years. Review notes that you made for other cohorts of students for the same unit/outcome.

Applying Professional Judgement STEP 4 Check that you can justify the marks you have awarded. Discuss your thoughts with a colleague Discuss your candidate submission with your IV Ask yourself, when the EV comes in can I justify this marking and if not then you need to go over the paper again. YOU are the professional in this area, do YOU think that the candidate has shown you that they can carry out the task required to a satisfactory standard that will meet the requirements of the unit specification.

Use your professional judgement.

Applying Professional Judgement Was that easy? Did you all agree? Candidate 1 - Pass/Fail/Redo Candidate 2 - Pass/Fail/Redo

Applying Professional Judgement Golden Rules Some decisions are straightforward Use all of the experience of your team/colleagues to help you to make consistent judgements. Record all of your decisions and reasons - keep all of your paperwork Discuss judgement with your IV Not all assessments have a Redo opportunity. Graded Units do not ever have a redo option Refer to the unit specification all of the time Use marking guidance provided in the ASP or Course tutor Guide The guidance is clear - each outcome of each unit will be different. Some units do not have reassessment - Economics units Candidates achieving 50% of the criteria correctly is unlikely to meet the unit spec requirements.

Any questions?
