Andrew: Active Witness Nov. 26

Ponder this … In what situations in our culture do we haggle for a bargain? It’s easy to feel like you need to haggle or debate when you witness. The disciple, Andrew, invited people to know Jesus. Christ-centered living chooses simple invitation over pushy “sales” of one’s faith.

Listen for Andrew’s invitation. John 1:35-42 (NIV) The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"

Listen for Andrew’s invitation. 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.

Listen for Andrew’s invitation. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).

Invite an Encounter with Jesus What prompted John’s disciples to follow Jesus? What action of Andrew testifies to the significance he placed on his personal encounter with Jesus? What was the first thing Andrew did after he had followed Jesus?

Invite an Encounter with Jesus Verse 30 says that Andrew “followed” Jesus. What does it mean to follow Jesus? What hinders us from following Jesus in that way? Who is someone in your circle of friends, acquaintances, family that you could bring to Jesus like Andrew brought his brother?

Invite an Encounter with Jesus Jesus is the best Christmas gift any of us have ever received … why is it easier to tell someone about a material or tangible gift we received than to tell them about Jesus? What unique opportunities does the Christmas season afford to invite others to encounter Jesus?

Listen again for an invitation. John 12:20-22 (NIV) Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus." 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

Lead Seekers to Encounter Jesus Who approached Philip and what did they want? How might we understand their request to Philip? What was it that triggered their interest in meeting Jesus? What kind of questions might a nonbeliever ask us about Christ?

Lead Seekers to Encounter Jesus How much do we have to know about Jesus before we can introduce someone else to Him? What are some ways we can engage people and have an opportunity to invite them to meet Jesus?

Listen for how we follow Jesus. John 12:23-26 (NIV) Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

Listen for how we follow Jesus. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

Be Clear about Following Jesus How was Jesus’ path to glory contrary to what most Jews usually thought?  The reality was that Jesus came as a suffering servant (Isaiah 53) who would end up dying – and rising again from death. According to Jesus, what attitude and actions constitute true discipleship? How do we too often “love” our own lives?

Be Clear about Following Jesus How does Jesus want us to “hate” our lives? What would you tell someone about the challenges and benefits of following Christ? Challenges Benefits

Application Consider your story. Who introduced you to Jesus? Call or write and express your gratitude to the person. Even if they are gone to Glory, write out a thank-you.

Application Consider your schedule In your current schedule, what opportunities do you have to interact with people who are not Christians? If none, reevaluate how you can make room for those introductions.

Application Consider your preparation. Are you confident enough in Jesus to introduce someone else to Him? Check out the suggestion on this week’s Family Activities web page of how to write out your story. http://tinyurl.com/yddc8v9h Think of one specific person who needs that introduction, and resolve to make it when you see the person this week.
