The Standpoint of Professors Emeriti on the Teaching of European History Prof. Dr. George Leontsinis, Emeritus Professor of Modern Greek History and History Didactics, University of Athens, Greece

(i) The Systematic Teaching of European History in Primary Education (General Principles)

(ii) The Diachronic Presence of Greeks in the EUROPEAN Continent and the Shaping of European Civilisation – The Teaching of European History in Secondary Education

(iii) The Role of the University Historian and the Teaching of European History to the Students and Future Teachers in Primary and Secondary education

CONCLUSION It is important to stress the role and the specific mission of the university historian, who, through his or her work, offers answers to the conceptual, cultural and methodological questions of history. While teaching European history to students at university level, it is necessary to embrace the idea that he/she are promoting historical education for all citizens. Academic historians achieve this through the teacher of primary and secondary education whom they are training, who had previously been their student in any case, and via whom they are disseminating historical education to the school community and society. The key, then, for the teaching of European history at school is the university teacher and academic historian, from whom an education in history, out of necessity, is passed on, without exception, to all the citizens. Moreover, since history is one of the compulsory subjects taught in school, no citizen can escape the influence of the university historian. Therefore, we do need a sufficient educational programme of studies concerning European History as part of the school history curriculum and at university level.

Many thanks for your attention We aspire that the European Association of Professors Emeriti will sufficiently contribute towards this direction — i.e. towards the teaching of European History in Greek education, as, likewise, to the educational systems implemented in the other European countries. Many thanks for your attention
