Some DIY Methods to Unlock Your Frozen Car

Isn't it quite frustrating to have your car in the frozen state when you are about to drive out to your work place in the morning?

If you live in a place with chilled climate and don't have a garage or proper protection for your car then you are obviously going to deal with this situation.

Ice and snow can easily find their way into your door locks and put you in a stranded situation if you leave your car without a roof overnight or wash your car with cold water in the cold climate.

Anyway, you need not panic anymore during such issues as here are some ways to help you out for getting your car out of the snow grip.

Push the door

First check whether the doors are unlocked or not. Press your unlock key repeatedly to ensure the doors are unlocked.

Then push the door to break the ice. Even a small amount of force will do as the ice is very brittle.

Push on the outer part of the door and lean against the door without making any dent on your car body.

Following this try to open the door but not force open. This trick may work well.

Having a deicer would be of great help. Having this commercial agent will melt your ice and help you to start the vehicle.

If you are a cold climate dweller or a traveler in a cold climate then you should always carry a deicer in your car or home to kick away this freezing problem easily.

Hand sanitizer

Yes, you read it right. A hand sanitizer! Very few are aware of the fact that this small bottle would be so useful.

If you wonder how it would help then alcohol is the secret agent in it on rubbing which the freezing point of water is lowered melting the ice inside the car lock instantly.

Apply a few drops of the sanitizer on your key and insert it into the lock wiggling the key a bit so that the alcohol gets distributed well inside the lock.

Here you are with your car lock free from the ice.

Remote starting

Try to start the car remotely if you have remote car starter.

This will let the car heat thaw the car doors from inside. Moreover the heat will also melt the ice in the lock.

A hair dryer

Use this to heat blower to melt the ice on the car doors or in the car locks. Make sure to use a medium temperature of heating.

Take care that the electrical cords don't come in contact with the snow or water and be more careful while using electricity around water.

Although, these are some working DIY methods to get your car lock out of the grip of the ice but there are some other methods that may work but causing harm to your vehicle.

Never use a hot water to melt the ice. This is because even though the hot water can melt the ice but it will damage or sometimes melt the car lock.

When it is extremely chilled outside the hot water even gets frozen when as soon as you splash hot water into it.

Never force the key into the lock as this can either break the key inside the lock or break the car lock itself.

Don't use the ply bars or the screwdrivers to open the door as these will end up in breaking your door handle or causing any other unwanted issues in the door.

So, these are some of the DIY methods you should be aware of especially if you live in a cold climate.

Moreover, to prevent your car locks from getting frozen never clean them with water during very low temperatures and cover them before the rainfall or snowfall.
