General information The continent of Australia is Australia. The capital of Australia is Canberra. The population of Australia is 19,913,144. The main religions are Anglican and Roman Catholic. The size in square miles is 2,967,893.

Geologist Australia is between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Australia is bigger than Alaska in size. Australia's landforms are mountains, deserts, and the Great Barrier Reef. Australia borders no country. The Pacific and Indian Oceans touch Australia. Australia's natural resources are coal, diamond, gold, and uranium.

Economist Australia' s money is the Australian dollar. Australia' s imports are computers, crude oil, machinery. Australia' s exports are coal, gold, and meat. Jobs in Australia are working in banks, hospitals, schools, and tourism. Australia' s goods are wheat, sugarcane, barley, and fruits.

Historian Australia became a country on January 1, 1901. The British first came to Australia in 1770's. They claimed the land from native people called Aborigines. In 1787 the British began sending convicts to prison. Australia was also apart of world war 2.

Chef Australians eat many same foods as people in Great Britain. Australians call breakfast brekkie. For brekkie they eat eggs, sausage, or cereal. Others eat toast with baked beans or spaghetti. For lunch they fish and chips, meat pies, or sausage rolls. For dinner they eat meat with vegetables. Australians eat foods from other countries such as Greece, Italy, and China.

Educator Australian kids start school at six years old. They stop school at fifteen year old. Australian kids study subjects like math, history, and science. Australian students wear uniforms to school.

Politician Australia is a constitutional monarchy. In 1901, the newly joined colonies made Great Britain's queen the head of state. A governor general represents the king or queen in Australia. Members of parliament suggest bills for new laws. A bill becomes law after both the prime minister and the governor general sign it.

They watch fireworks and attend parades. April 25th is ANZAC Day. ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corps. On this day, Australians remember soldiers who were in the war. Christians in Australia celebrate Christmas. During Christmas the weather is hot so families have barbecues or go to the beach. Other holiday they celebrate are Boxing Day, Commonwealth Day, Easter, New Year's Day, and The Queen's Birthday.

Christmas Christmas down under has all the glitter, tinsel, and razzmatazz of a Christmas in New York, London, Paris, and Vancouver for the majority of Australians Christmas in Australia is never white because it never snows. In Australia they sometimes experience floods, hailstorms, cyclones, and bush fires at Christmastime. 80% of the time they are blessed with blue skies.
