So you don’t like the Tsar? Lesson Objectives: To know the key resistance to the Tsar and the autocratic system of government in Russia in the early 1900s.

Resistance to the Tsars Before and during the reign of Nicholas there had been people and groups asking for change to the Russian system of government to make it more representative.

What did they want? Some of these groups wanted to reform Tsarism to make it a constitutional monarchy.

What did they want? Some of these groups wanted to reform Tsarism to make it a constitutional monarchy. Others wanted a full revolution to overthrow the whole Tsarist system.

What tactics did they use? Some were peaceful and demonstrated or had petitions.

What tactics did they use? Some were peaceful and demonstrated or had petitions. Others were much more violent. Nicholas’ grandfather, Tsar Alexander II had 7 attempts on his life (the last one worked in 1881).

So what do we know? Not everyone in Russia liked the Tsarist System of government (absolute monarchy) Not all of these people wanted the Tsar to go, but wanted a bit of reform. Others wanted the whole system overthrown. They had totally different methods of trying to get things changed.

So you don’t like the Tsar? Your task is to create a pamphlet for someone in Russia who would like to see the system changed. What were the different groups in Russia in Nicholas? What did each group aim to achieve? What were their tactics?
