Residents & Fellows Research course 2017

Why have a research course for post-graduate medical trainees? Research is the cornerstone of modern medicine Aim: instill a fundamental understanding of how research can make you the best possible doctor you can be. This will mean different things for different people. Understanding how evidence is generated, the skillset to interpret it and the ability to translate it into clinical practice is an essential skill. Some will grow an interest in conducting research of their own Regardless of your past experiences, relative interest in research, specialty, or future aspirations, this course will optimize your ability to integrate the power of research into your career.

Our course ‘philosophy’ Learn by ‘doing’ Develop and execute your own research project Minimum number of lectures Emphasis on working in small groups

How do I prepare for the course? Identify an area of interest Identify and confirm a preceptor Define your research question

Course Presentations Defining your research question Choosing the right study design Searching the medical literature Defining your aims, hypotheses, and outcome measures Refining your methods Analyzing your data: intro to biostatistics Qualitative research; Health economics; Human simulation Research Ethics Application process for scientific and ethical review

Course Expectations Daily attendance & Evaluations: Complete One45 form Minimize your call Submit assignments to Jolene, group leaders, and mentor Meet with your mentor regularly (weekly) Develop full research protocol Submit scientific review and ethics application by end of course Present poster on Research Day Participate in Research Day (Thursday, Nov 16th)
