Third Grade Newsletter GIFTED GAZETTE 1.6 Sept. 18th - Sept. 22nd What we’re learning this week… Spelling, Vocabulary, & Test Schedule Reading: Greek Mythology This week we will… create Greek mythology character trading cards read The Magic Treehouse: Ancient Greece and the Olympics Fact Tracker nonfiction reading skill: skimming text to locate information Language/Writing: This week we will… distinguish between common and proper nouns. use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills. write an original myth. Spelling: sh-, th-, ph-, wh-, Math: This week we will… continue standard method for long division and problem solving master 3’s facts with “Fluency Friday” speed test: 25 correct facts in 1 minute, 40 seconds. Project of the Week (P.O.W.): In-class Greek Mythology research is due Friday. Research: Choose a character/god/goddess/mythological monster to research in preparation for our Greek style Wax Museum Friday 9/29. Try using a kid-friendly search engine like KidRex.org , kiddle.co , or KidzSearch.com or view teacher webpages for more links. Books can be checked out in school library, public library, and classroom. Speech is due this Friday 9/22 for teacher approval! Speech should last approximately 1 minute and should be written in first person (as if the student is speaking as the character). On-Level Spelling: Classical Roots Vocab.: Lesson 6 pages 24 - 28 deserve server service serviceable Friday Test Schedule: Reading: Graded Classwork (Magic Treehouse Fact Tracker Reading Journal & Greek Mythology Trading Cards) Vocabulary: Lesson 6 test Language: common and proper nouns and mentor sentence skills Spelling: test Math: Fluency Friday Test for 3’s Long Division test WEDNESDAY Greek speech is due FRIDAY or sooner for teacher approval. Please do not delay! Practice this oral presentation…it should last approximately 1 minute. The kids are so pumped to start reading these gifts to our classroom library! Our Greek style Wax Museum is set for Friday 9/29! Details and expectations went home in a letter last week. Students will dress and speak “in character” for an audience of their peers at school. Students should have chosen a character/god/goddess/mythological monster they would like to portray and begin writing the words for their oral presentation. Please refer to the directions sheet or email questions. Please continue to study multiplication facts nightly! We are so proud of the kids progress. Our goal is 25 problems in 1 minute and 40 seconds to achieve mastery. Try using mathfactspro.com or mathfactscafe.com for nightly fluency practice.
