Agenda: Your College/Career Team:Who Are We? Important College/Career Ready Skills Quick Review of Grad Requirements Using your time now Supports your senior year Skills to be practicing to prepare you for year 13 and beyond What is a CRLE? Complete CRLE #2 Transcript Review

Who Are We? Ms. Chapman A-Da Ms. Holly Ng-Sn Ms. Alice De-I Ms. Raquel College & Career Coordinator Mr. Tran So-Z Ms. Goldman J-Ne

A Stanford dean says you should have these skills to be a successful adult Skills to master during JR and SR years 1. Manage assignments, workload, and deadlines: Compare to freshman & sophomore years 2. Talk to people outside of family ie. teachers community members, college admissions counselors, employers (in interviews) etc 3. Handle interpersonal problems- conflicts with friends, family, teachers etc. Fly these in!

Skills for JR and SR year 4. Cope with ups and downs in a healthy way: How to get support when you need it? Healthy ways to blow off steam 5. Earn and manage money: Summer Job Opportunities! 6. Get involved in your community: more to come 7. Take risks: meet new people, take a class which intimidates or challenges you, apply to your dream college, try a new hobby or a new food!

More Specifically – Think about your career interests… What classes are preparing you for Year 13? Who are staff that you can or have talked to about pursuing information you need? (Info about working, going to community college or 4 year university) What are your biggest questions/concerns you have ? (We will write them down to be sure we cover) Share in small group

Graduation Requirements Total Credits: 24 Credits English 4 Credits Math 3 Credits Science 3 Credits Social Studies 3 Credits Physical Education 1 Credit Health Education 1 Credit World Language 2 Credits Career & Technical Education, 1 Credit The Arts or the 3rd year of the same World Language Electives 6 Credits Show these…don’t go through

More Graduation Requirements Meet 11th grade state testing/Essential skills in Reading, Writing and Math Complete these three items 2 Career Related Learning Experiences (CRLES) Resume My Plan Essay After we talk about grad requirements through year 12,….tie to year 13 when thinking about college/career planning…what is your best guess about growth industries?

Job Growth Industries! Health Care STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math Manufacturing: Construction, Electricians, Plumbers, HVAC Connect to range of jobs with certificates to post masters in stem and health care

Post Secondary Education Examples from PCC website just talk about. Now, guess what are the biggest growth industries in Portland?

What does it take to get into a University/College? GPA SAT or ACT score Extracurricular activities Volunteer and Work experience Personal Statement/Interview Letters of recommendation Colleges want well rounded students who are going to make positive contributions to their campus Challenging Coursework (AP, Honors, 4-year of math, science or world language) Reiterate summer jobs and volunteer opps Raquel sends via email: Kaiser

C or better core classes SAT or ACT test scores GPA requirements State Schools in Oregon Undergraduate Freshman Admissions Requirements 2016-2017 Academic Year C or better core classes SAT or ACT test scores GPA requirements 3.0- Southern Oregon University, Oregon State University, University of Oregon, Portland State University, Western Oregon University, Oregon Institute of Technology 2.75- Eastern Oregon University If time talk about spending time on collegeboard and act.org

What’s the Big Deal about D’s and F’s? Fs = 0 Credit = Recovering the credit! Ds= HS school credit BUT 4 year colleges will NOT accept Ds in a core subject on your High School transcript, so if you get a D and want to go to a University, you will have to re-take the course! Includes AP classes D is for Diploma C is for College

What if I want to start at a Community College and transfer to a University? This is a great plan for many! OREGON Promise! Free community college for ALL! Regardless of immigration status or income! (hopefully) NEW FAFSA deadline! FAFSA opens in October of your senior year! Be sure to check out the transfer requirements for the University you want to transfer to. Especially GPA, credits, and prerequisite requirements.

Small Group Discussion Name one fact about 2 or 4 year college admission requirements Name one benefit of attending a community college Burning questions??? Report out Time????

Supports for Senior Year Counselors will push into your classroom early in the fall to give you more specific info on how to get your transcript, get a letter of recommendation, etc. We will offer a variety info sessions during tutorials to answer your question and help you with specific topics Reach out to others in your life who have can offer you support Attend College Events for Juniors (4/27, 4/30) Register for Gear-Up Jump Start July 2017

What is a CRLE? Career Related Learning experiences (CRLEs) help students connect what they are learning in school to the real world.

Examples of CRLE’s · Mock Interview · Guest speaker · Job shadow · Community service · Internship · Service learning · Career Day Career expo · Mock Interview · Mock trial · Project based learning College/Career Fair (College fair or College tour will be considered a CRLE if students are exploring programs specifically)
