The Sapphire (0001) Surface: A Transparent Substitute for Mica for DNA Nanostructure Imaging Masud Rahman, David Neff, Zach Boggs, Michael Norton Department of Chemistry, Marshall University Huntington, WV Abstract:  Mica has served the DNA nanostructures community well as an atomically flat non-perturbative substrate with exceptionally tunable DNA adhesion properties. As part of a search for alternative substrates, the interaction of nanostructured DNA with semi-metallic graphite1 and with semiconducting MoS22 has been characterized. These materials have been found to significantly re-organize the programmed origami structures. While far from a comprehensive survey, these results suggest to us that the same van der Waals forces stabilizing most two dimensional materials are able to compete well with the van der Waals forces stabilizing DNA nanostructures. Our search has therefore turned to 3D ionic materials with high chemical, mechanical and thermal stability. Al2O3 is an excellent representative example material with additional benefits including transparency and a high level of technological development.
