Aim & Do Now Aim: What are city-states and how were they ruled? Do Now: Answer the slip that is being handed out. Keep it in your binder.

Group Questions 1. What is a “city-state” and infer where laws might be made for the ancient Greeks? 3. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences of the city-states of Athens and Sparta and critique why one might be better than the other. 2. Use context clues to discover what an “agora” was and compare it to where people might speak about laws today. 4. Analyze the document and prove what you think is the best form of government.

Class Notes City-states or political units made up of a city and all the surrounding lands. In the center of most city- states was a large hill with a fortress. This large hill is known as an acropolis.
