Presentation transcript:

Do Now Copy the HW. Quiz on section 3 Monday! From page 20: Copy the definition for social class onto your vocab sheet. Brainstorm: What kinds of social classes do we have today?

Social Class A group of people with similar backgrounds, incomes, and ways of living Different social classes: Kings Government officials Artisans Peasants (farmers)

trade Where was your shirt made? What about the bananas you buy in the supermarket? Where do they come from?

Thinking about trade… Trade is clearly very important today. Hunters-gatherers did not trade that much, and if they did it was usually only plants, animals, and other nearby resources. Once people settled down in towns and villages, trade became much more common.

Trade and Social classes Each “group” is going to become a social class. You will have 5 minutes to discuss these questions with your social class before you trade: What does it mean to be a ____________? What are the needs of your social class? How much wealth do you have? Why?

Trade simulation Our classroom is going to act like a growing village. Each “social class” is going to get different items to trade. When I tell you to, you are going to move freely around our classroom “village” and trade. You can decide how much to trade, and what items you want. Keep in mind the value of these items- they are not all worth the same.

Simulation debrief with your group If you made a trade, why did you decide to trade? What are some other reasons why people might decide to trade? Do you think you are better off after your trade? Why or why not? Did anyone trade more than once? Why? Did some people have more items or more valuable items than others? Why do you think this is? Are you totally happy with your trades? Why or why not? What are the possible benefits of trading? What are the possible disadvantages of trading?

Simulation debrief with your group If you made a trade, why did you decide to trade? To get resources I don’t have in my area To improve something in my life What are some other reasons why people might decide to trade? If I can get something to help my job or family Do you think you are better off after your trade? Why or why not? Did anyone trade more than once? Why? Yes, they had more items or more valuable items

Simulation debrief with your group Did some people have more items or more valuable items than others? Why do you think this is? Yes, because your social class determines the resources and wealth you have Are you totally happy with your trades? Why or why not? What are the possible benefits of trading? Get new materials; improve lifestyle; exchange of ideas and information; discovery of new places and people What are the possible disadvantages of trading? Dangerous travel; war; greed

closure Why was trading so important back then? Why is it so important today? How did trading impact the development of social classes?

Basically…. When people began to trade, it became a battle between the “haves” and the “have nots.” In other words, some people had a lot of things ($$$$) and some people had little ($). Thus, there are many levels of a social class system.
