The mystery of the Duke and his nephews Children of the King The mystery of the Duke and his nephews

Power Struggle for the Throne Can you find Richard III of work on this family tree? Can you find Edward IV of work? What is the relationship of Richard and Edward? What do you notice about the dates that they ruled as monarch? Did Richard and Edward have any children? What is the relationship of Richard III to the children of Edward IV?

Edward IV (1461 – 1470) (1471- 1483) What do you notice about the dates of the reign of Edward IV? Edward was the first King from the House of York During the years 1470 and 1471 Henry VI from the House of Lancaster was restored to the throne. Edward and his brother Richard fled to Flanders Edward retook the throne in 1471. In 1483, he fell ill and died at the age of 40

Edward V (9th April – 26th June 1483) Edward IVs 12 year old son, Edward, became King How long did he reign? His uncle Richard was nominated as the young king’s Protector, until he became an adult and could rule on his own.

What happened to Edward V? Edward and his younger brother, Richard, were sent to the Tower of London to live. It was claimed that the princes were illegitimate children and Edward was not the lawful King

Their uncle was crowned, Richard III

Never seen again The princes were taken to the ‘inner apartments’ There were few reports of them being seen alive and eventually they disappeared Nobody knows for certain what happened Did Richard III have them killed so they were no longer a threat?

Richard has often been portrayed as a villain.

Bones of the Story Richard was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field His skeleton was found buried underneath a car park in Leicester in 2013 Two child skeletons were discovered in the Tower of London in 1674, but there is no definite proof that they are the two princes Will the mystery ever be solved?
