Overview Introduction Training Technical aspects of my work Dissemination Conclusion

Introduction – My background MEng in Electrical and Computer Engineering MSc in Telecommunications Technical Interests: Optical Communications Optoelectronics Communication Systems and Networks

Training CERN is a natural place for training: Experts in a variety of fields – all in one place!! Also the level of expertise of the associated partners is exceptional I had the opportunity to benefit from – and I would like to take the opportunity and thank: My CERN supervisor and my section leader who have extensive knowledge of the field and they have always been willing to help me The experienced researcher My academic supervisors at University College London, which is the associated partner My colleagues at the PH-ESE-BE section, who provided their help in a variety of technical aspects People from other sections who helped me particularly during the requirements gathering phase

Training During my fellowship I also had the chance to attend the following courses and seminars: UCL course on Optical Sources and Components UCL course on Optical Transmitter Characterization (Laboratory Course) “The where, why and how of optical access” – Seminar on Passive Optical Networks, presented at CERN I also had the opportunity to attend the following conferences: European Conference on Optical Communication London Communications Symposium ITU Telecom World Exhibition visit

Training CERN French Language course Presentation Course “Leaders in Science” – confidence building course Secondments: 26 January 2009 – 22 March 2009: Attendance of UCL courses, experience in using optical communication systems simulation software, PhD enrollment 4 May 2010 – 19 May 2010: Laboratory work, meeting with expert in particular aspects of use of optoelectronic components

Technical Aspects Versatile Link Project – Investigation of Passive Optical Network (PON) architectures for SLHC Passive Optical Networks (PONs): Optical fiber access network primarily employing passive optical components and configured around a splitter/combiner or Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) The optical counterpart of xDSL, intended to deliver Gbps bandwidth to end users

Technical aspects Outcomes – so far: Development of a Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) PON with fixed and deterministic latency for the distribution of Timing, Trigger and Control signals at the SLHC Design and Simulation of a Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WMD) PON for data read-out at the SLHC – special features: high upstream bandwidth, downstream broadcasting

Dissemination Presentations: Transceivers for Passive Optical Networks – ACEOLE 6-month meeting Passive Optical Networks Transceiver Measurements – PH-ESE-BE meeting Passive Optical Networks for Particle Physics Applications – London Communications Symposium 2009 Future PON Technologies and Architectures – PH-ESE-BE meeting PON Simulation Studies – PH-ESE-BE meeting

Dissemination Papers: “Passive Optical Networks for Particle Physics Applications”, London Communications Symposium 2009 “Passive Optical Networks in Particle Physics Experiments”, Topical Workshop on Electronics for Particle Physics, 2009 “A Passive Optical Network with Latency Monitoring Capability for the Distribution of Timing-Trigger and Control Signals in High Energy Physics Experiments” – (submitted for publication) IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science

Conclusion Passive Optical Networks, one of the most prominent candidates for the next-generation of access technologies, may be used at the SLHC Use of PONs could lead to an easier to maintain architecture, with a number of other potential advantages (cost, upgradability, etc.) Despite the unique set of requirements of the SLHC, the research outcomes can be extended and used in conventional applications I strongly believe that the experience I have gained at CERN will greatly affect my career – and my life – in a positive way

Thank you Any questions?
