PASTORAL ISSUES THE BIG LEAP TO GCSE.....AND THE ISSUES THAT MIGHT COME YOUR WAY.....

IS YOUR CHILD AN INDEPENDENT THINKER OR A CROWD-FOLLOWER? Do they: SMOKE? DRINK? HAVE AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP? TAKE ILLEGAL DRUGS? DO YOU KNOW?

HOW EMOTIONALLY RESILIENT IS YOUR CHILD? Last year: 27 students in Yrs. 10 and 11 had a range of mental health issues/illnesses including: - eating disorders depression self-harming SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS WERE RELATEDTO/EXACERBATED BY ILLEGAL DRUG USE

School Counsellor Started September 2012 Increased from 2 day provision to 3 day Students/ Parents request School Counsellor service Email/ ring Mr. Donald if interested Waiting times

HOW TO HELP Ask subject staff if you are unsure Keep your child’s tutor/LM informed of any changes which might affect your child’s study or examination success Use planners/email/ phone to communicate with staff whenever a concern arises PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE Be aware of the enormous stress students are under especially if combining with part-time jobs, hobbies etc. Avoid unnecessary absences- changes to legislation- ‘exceptional circumstances’ Strike a balance- all work and no play....

P.A.S.S.? Pupil Attitude to Self and School A diagnostic red/amber/green system of identifying students emotionally/attitudinally ‘at risk’ Based on 9 criteria Potential link with academic underachievement

Why are we using it? It supports the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda: - Be healthy Stay safe Enjoy and achieve Make a positive contribution Achieve economic well-being It provides an important contribution to our OFSTED SEF It encourages student voice and dialogue

PASS PUPIL ATTITUDES TO SELF AND SCHOOL FEELINGS ABOUT SCHOOL MEASURES FEELINGS OF INCLUSION/ALIENATION. LOW SCORE CAN INDICATE FEELINGS OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION AND ALSO POTENTIALLY BULLYING PERCEIVED LEARNING MEASURES FEELINGS OF SUCCESS/LACK OF CAPABILITY SNAPSHOT OF ‘HERE AND NOW’. CAN PROVIDE EARLY WARNING OF DEMORALIZATION/DISAFFECTION SELF REGARD CUMULATIVE ACCOUNT OF ‘SNAPSHOTS’ OVER A PERIOD OF TIME PREPAREDNESS FOR LEARNING TOOLS TO DO THE JOB – STUDY SKILLS, INCLUDING ATTENTIVENESS, POWERS OF CONCENTRATION. CORRELATES MOST CLOSELY WITH BEHAVIOURAL DIFFICULTIES IN CLASS

PASS PUPIL ATTITUDES TO SELF AND SCHOOL ATTITUDE TO TEACHERS RELATIONSHIPS WITH ADULTS. MOST +VE IN TERMS OF MAXIMUM RESPONSE NATIONALLY GENERAL WORK ETHIC FIRST OF TWO MOTIVATIONAL MEASURES. MOTIVATION TO SUCCEED NOT JUST IN SCHOOL CONFIDENCE IN LEARNING PERSEVERANCE IN FACE OF CHALLENGE ATTITUDES TO ATTENDANCE VERY HIGH CORRELATION WITH ACTUAL ATTENDANCE RESPONSE TO CURRICULUM DEMANDS SECOND MOTIVATIONAL FACTOR TO UNDERTAKE AND COMPLETE TASKS SET WITHIN SCHOOL CURRICULUM

WHAT NOW/NEXT? PASS survey planned for early 2015 Identified students will be interviewed by Learning Manager/Tutor, using scripted questions Intervention strategies put in place as appropriate – e.g. staff/student relationship issue
