Movement…get to come to the front! Disability: is seen as a problem that arises when a society does not take into account the needs of people Impairment: restrictions on the day-to-day restrictions that may arise because of a long-term physical or mental condition Disabling environment: where adaptations and other facilities are not in place to ensure that people with impairments can take a full part in social life. Scenario Task Sarah is 45 years old and has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She needs considerable help with daily living activities. She is in a wheelchair and is unable to leave the house without a carer. Sarah lives alone, speaks very little English and she feels socially very isolated. Sarah has recently been assessed by the local Social Services department for a range of community care services. She is going to receive a direct payment so that she can choose her own care provider and she will be able to pay them directly. She is quite confused by this arrangement and does not know where to go for help. Explain what is meant by the term ‘impairment’ and ‘disability’ in this context? What type of environment does Sarah live in? Now in groups of 3 or 4 create your own scenario on issues relating to concepts of Ill Health. Oral Questioning...targeted...using names!
