INTRODUCTION Common river sand is expensive due to excessive cost of transportation sources. Also large scale depletion of these sources creates environmental problems. As environmental transportation and other constraints make the availability and use of river sand less attractive, a substitute or replacement product for concrete industry needs to be found. River sand is most commonly used fine aggregate in the production of concrete poses the problem of acute shortage in many areas..

DEFINITION Quarry Rock Dust can be defined as residue, tailing or other non-voluble waste material after the extraction and processing of rocks to form fine particles less than 4.75mm.

ARPN Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences 1.STRENGTH AND DURABILITY PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE CONTAINING QUARRY ROCK DUST AS FINE AGGREGATE R. Ilangovana, N. Mahendran and K. Nagamanib ARPN Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences This paper presents the feasibility of the usage of Quarry Rock Dust as hundred percent substitutes for Natural Sand in concrete. Tests were conducted on cubes and beams to study the strength of concrete made of Quarry Rock Dust and the results were compared with the Natural Sand Concrete. An attempt has also been made to durability studies on Quarry Rock Dust when compared with the Natural Sand concrete. It is found that the compressive, flexural strength and Durability Studies of concrete made of Quarry Rock Dust are nearly 10% more than the conventional concrete.

2. A STUDY OF COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE USING QUARRY DUST AS FINE AGGREGATE AND MIXING WITH ADMIXTURE TYPE E Prachoom Khamput This research is related to study the compressive strength of concrete using quarry dust as fine aggregate instead of sand. Ratio of cement: sand: rock is 1: 2: 4 (by weight) and at water-cement ratio (w/c) of 0.45. The admixture type E is added for increasing the compressive strength. the compressive strength at 28 days between concrete mixing with quarry dust and sand, the maximum compressive strength is 407 kN for concrete mixing with 70% of quarry dust while the normal concrete has value of 348 kN. From this research,the quarry dust could be used to replace sand in general concrete structures.

3.THE USE OF QUARRY DUST FOR SCC APPLICATIONS D.W.S. HO, A.M.M. SHEINN, C.C. NG, C.T. TAM CEMENT AND CONCRETE RESEARCH 32 (2002) 505– 511 This paper deals with the utilization of alternative materials, such as quarry dust, for SCC applications. Results from rheological measurements on pastes and concrete mixes incorporating limestone or quarry dust were compared. It was found that the quarry dust, as supplied, could be used successfully in the production of SCC. However, due to its shape and particle size distribution, mixes with quarry dust required a higher dosage of superplasticiser to achieve similar flow properties

CONCLUSION From the test results it is concluded that the average compressive strength of concrete by using Quarry dust as fine aggregate is nearly 57.7 % higher than that of control specimen. The shape and texture of quarry dust particles have an important effect on the interlocking of paste and aggregate particle leading to an improvement of strength of concrete. So we can conclude that Quarry rock dust can be an economic alternative material to the river sand
