Year 1 Attitudes and Expectations New to Year 2 Year 1 Attitudes and Expectations Children work more at tables. They learn to take turns, to have help from a teacher and a TA but also work independently. Children learn to stay focussed on a task and how to set out their work neatly. Children learn to ask and answer questions respectfully by putting their hands up and listening well to others. Children are learning personal organisation skills e.g. keeping track of clothing, tying shoelaces, putting book-bags away, remembering the routines. These skills can also be reinforced at home! Children learn positive behaviour showing respect and consideration towards peers, adults and school environment, taking responsibility for our own actions. Each class has agreed rules, rewards and sanctions.

Year 1 Essentials: Home Learning New to Year 2 Year 1 Essentials: Home Learning Assigned homework – This will be given weekly in a book after Christmas It will be related to learning in school. Homework may be research, writing, maths or discussion based. Please support your children and record a comment in the homework book. Usually handed out on a Thursday and returned by Tuesday morning please. Supporting school learning – The school website has class pages that are updated half termly. A yearly learning overview for Y1 is attached to these pages as will be this talk. Handouts will be sent home showing Maths, Reading, Writing and Science Age Related Expectations. Daily Reading – See reading slide. Autumn Term – See helping at home slides. Key tasks to practise, letter and number formation, reading and spelling the first 100 words, counting objects and counting forwards and backwards.

New to Year 2 Year 1 Reading At School guided reading is taught in groups once a week. Reading is also taught in daily English and phonic sessions. For homework daily reading is encouraged. Children are set a colour band by the teacher and are helped to change their home reading book during their group reading session. Reading a book several times is encouraged however if children wish to change their reading book more frequently than once a week they can do this independently first thing in the morning. Only one book at a time is aloud. Reading is assessed at regular intervals however if you feel your child has had a reading spurt and could benefit from moving up a colour, please inform the class teacher and an assessment can be brought forward. Reading diaries are provided to record home and school reading, and to aid home school communication. Please do record when you hear your child read.

Year 1 Helping at Home Key English Skills New to Year 2 Year 1 Helping at Home Key English Skills Practise correct letter formation: use the correct handwriting formation sheet. Learn the 1st 100 high frequency words, children need to be able to read and spell these words. Read regularly (see Tips for Reading hand out). Practise learning and reciting simple rhymes and poems. Practise retelling traditional tales and other well loved stories. Write at every opportunity (lists, letters, labels, postcards for play and real-life purposes).

Thank you for all your support! New to Year 2 Thank you for all your support! Home/school communication is key to children’s success: when children know that all adults around them are saying the same thing then they feel secure and are more likely to succeed. Can you volunteer to help regularly or at one off events? e.g. Hearing readers, Design and Technology days in school, trips out, local walks, dig the veg beds etc. Share your expertise: we have learnt about the heart, had story-telling...

New to Year 2 Finally Please fill in an evaluation. Information packs will go home tomorrow: Letter and number formation Useful tips for reading High Frequency Words Maths, Reading, Writing and Science Age Related Expectations THANK YOU
