#32 Ch.6.1-6.2 Notes A New Industrial Age OBJECTIVE: Understand the causes and effects of the expansion of American Industry.

Opening Question How do you think big businesses originally gained power in America? Explain in 4-5 sentences

Ch.6.1 The Expansion of Industry Industrial Growth Factors: Large supply of natural resources. An explosion of inventions. A growing city population that wanted new products. Government support of big business.

Ch.6.2 The Age of Railroads The growth of the railroads benefited the nation but led to corruption and the need for government regulation.

Railroads Span Time and Space Railroads make local transit reliable, westward expansion possible. Government makes land grant, loans to railroads. Why???

Railroad Time Railroad schedules hard to maintain. Each area had their own time. Led to creation of time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific). Everyone in each zone would follow the same time.

Opportunities and Opportunists Wish for control, profit leads to some railroad companies to corruption. Who regulated the railroads?

The Grange and the Railroads Farmers angry over perceived railroad corruption. Railroads fix prices, keep farmers in debt.

Public outrage leads to Interstate Commerce Act 1887: Federal government can supervise (regulate) railroads. Established Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). Reaction of railroad companies?

The Impact of Railroads The Railroad Boom led to …. The rapid industrialization of the U.S. Expansion of the West Some U.S. cities specializing in one product.
