What is Office Subscription? Office Subscription in Office 365 is the Office ProPlus suite, available as a service. It is essentially equivalent to Office ProPlus 2010 in volume licensing, with almost all of the same applications and functionality, including the Office Web Apps. Office Subscription Agent Office Professional Plus uses Office Subscription Agent without requiring Key Management Server to activate. Office Subscription Agent is an additional component of Office Professional Plus. Office Subscription Agent runs osbusvc.exe and osaui.exe as services. Office Professional Plus automatically acquires and activates Office product key(s). OSA = Office Subscription Agent OSS = Office Subscription Service OSA - This is no longer the Windows Live ID Sign in Assistant, but a new MOS ID sign in assistant. This is installed with Connector, and only if it's not on the user's machine for some reason will the user be prompted to go get it before activating Office. OSA - It doesn't get a new key, but it renews the 30 day license on that same key, so long as the subscription continues to remain valid. This is done in the background so user never sees/feels it.

Office Subscription Agent (Continued) Users are required to enter their Office 365 IDs and passwords to validate subscriptions. Subscriptions are registered and managed by account administrators. Users are permitted to activate up to five machines with the same Office 365 ID and password combination (based on the agreement) Office Subscription Agent requires installation of Office 365 ID Sign-In Assistant. Office Subscription Agent reconnects to Office Subscription Service every 30 days to renew the product key. Deployment Options Office 365 Portal Network Share Pros Easiest for companies with little or no IT help No internal organization resources required Full user self-service approach Functionality provided by Office 365; additional steps required by IT administrator Limited IT skill required Limited infrastructure required Requires only network share and network access Single download; more efficient for slow connections Supports customized installs Some deployment controls Allows 32-bit and 64-bit control Cons Each download is 650 MB Does not allow any managed customization Users select either 32-bit or 64-bit options No IT administrator control Difficult to track deployment Requires IT administrator activity Requires some internal infrastructure May affect local network performance Suggested Scenario Isolated and mobile users who don’t have ready access to an internal share location; organizations that do not have share location or technical resources to support a centralized distribution Customers who have limited bandwidth connectivity to Internet resources or want to have added controls of the deployment and have IT administrators to manage the setup process Unmanaged Desktop Deployment Note: Users must have local machine rights to install desktop software for these scenarios. Organizations who have limited IT staff and who loosely manage desktop applications should use the following steps to deploy Office Professional Plus. Organizations looking for the most basic way to deploy the beta experience Before you begin you must carefully analyze the current use scenarios of your existing productivity suite. Scenario User installs from Office 365 Portal User installs from internal share Pros Office 365 provided functionality – additional steps required by IT administrator No internal organization resources are required Full user self-service approach   Single download of Office Pro Plus installation files from internet Reduces likelihood of installation copy errors Process can be used to distribute customized installations Offers limited deployment controls, including passive and quiet install options Allows control of user selection installation type – 32/64 bit Cons Each user installation must download the entire installation file (~600 MB) Does not allow any customization of the installation. Administrator must have accessible share local share location for users to service the installer Requires IT Administrator with technical knowledge to setup share and manage deployment to user Suggested Scenario Isolated and mobile users who don’t have ready access to an internal share location or organizations that do not have share location or technical resources to support a centralized distribution Customers who have limited bandwidth connectivity to internet resources or want to have added controls of the deployment and have an IT Administrator to manage the setup process Following the installation of the Office Professional Plus client each user must run the Microsoft Online Services Connector. Each user must run and install this connector following the installation of Office Pro Plus.

Deployment and Customization in Managed Environments Organizations may desire more control or customization Customization may require Office Customization tools (VL) Users must still run Microsoft Online Services Connector Updates required to connect can be pre-deployed by admins Download Office Professional Plus Extract OPP files Download / extract OCT Customize Installation Deploy custom Office package IT Admin downloads from Office 365 portal to local location Extract files from MicrosoftOffice.exe/extract:path From Microsoft Download Center - 32/64 versions Extract ADM/X templates and ADMIN folder Copy Admin to OPP extract location Add patches, add-ins, additional components Save MSP Add package to SWD, SCCM. Publish/Deploy Managed Desktop Deployments Organizations who maintain a managed desktop to streamline application management may not want to utilize the installation options outline above. Office Pro Plus can be deployed with most standard Office deployment options. Refer the deployment options for Office Pro Plus as outlined in the Office TechNet library. Office Professional Plus does not support deployment via App-V or Presentation virtualization. If these deployment methods are required you must use volume license versions of Office 2010. You must take a few steps to prepare the Office Professional Plus package for complete customization and advanced deployment options. The following outlines the activities the IT administrator should carry out to provide access to the full set of customization & deployment options. The installation file for Office Professional Plus should be downloaded from the Office 365 portal by an IT Administrator to a local location. Once the installation file is downloaded you must extract the installation files from it. Extract the MicrosoftOffice.exe installer with the “/extract:path” switch. Refer to the command line help for assistance on completing this activity. The extracted files are in a structure that is similar to the structure used in other Office 2010 products. If you want to apply systematic customizations during installation you must obtain the Office Customization Tool (OCT) from the download center. The OCT is only included in volume license versions of Office by default. The OCT tool is included admin template download. Copy the “admin” folder from this download into the root of the extracted Office Professional Plus installation source. Refer to the documentation on use the OCT tool on the TechNet library. Note that the activation options in the OCT only list volume activation options, these options do not apply to the Office Professional Plus setup. Leave the default selection as KMS activation, but the actual activation will continue to use the subscription activation model delivered with Office Pro Plus. You can automatically apply updates during initial installation of Office by inserting Office update MSP files into the updates folder in the extracted file. Multiple updates can be placed in the update folder, all updates will be applied. Deployment can be completed with the supported Office 2010 deployment methods, excluding App-V or presentation virtualization. Use the deployment which aligns with your organizations application management strategy. Following the installation of the Office Professional Plus client each user must run the Microsoft Online Services Connector. Each user must run and install this connector following the installation of Office Pro Plus. Administrators can streamline the connector installation by provisioning the required updates prior deployment of the connector. The following connector reference article outlines the updates which can be installed manually or automatically via the connector.
