Scholar Academic Ideology By Matt McGarry May 25, 2011

From Last Time… Schiro’s Four Curriculum Ideologies: Social Efficiency Ideology Learner Centered Ideology Social Reconstruction Ideology Scholar Academic Ideology

To Tell the Truth Remember that old game show? Three contestants pretend to be a person Two are impostors, one is legit On the next page – can you identify which person is a typical Scholar Academic?

To Tell the Truth 1 3 2

Answer…any of those three that believe in the following principles. Acculturation Good citizenship Perspective Initiation Textbooks General acceptance Intellect above all Hierarchy Dynamic Knowledge Bases Extending culture Teachers impart knowledge Ranking English, math, science, history, & foreign language

Culture Scholar Academics believe in culture, paying dues, & initiations Students ‘inducted’ as mini-Scholar Academics The ideology is self-sustaining

Dissemination of Knowledge Pyramid Structure Scholar Academics love: Ranking Hierarchy Teachers impart knowledge rather than students learn from teachers Teachers are the active voice Students passive Important delineation Search for Knowledge Scholars Teachers Dissemination of Knowledge Students

Morals & Ethics Scholar Academics believe: Good citizenship is a duty Valuing intellect above all is most important Higher thinking = good citizenship

What to study? Scholar Academics generally break knowledge into disciplines: English Math Science History Foreign language Each discipline has a knowledge base

Knowledge Bases Knowledge bases are dynamic New knowledge must be generally accepted by the discipline as a whole Textbooks are a primary resource material Knowledge is taught from the perspective of the specific discipline
