Warm-Up Who is Bob Marley? What country is he from?

Bob Marley – February 6, 1945 to May 11, 1981

What is Pan-Africanism? Movement dedicated to establishing independence for Africa nations And unity for black throughout the world Originated with conferences in London 1900, 1919, 1921, 1923 First truly intergovernmental conference held in 1958 (Ghana)

Bob Marley and Pan-African Influenced by Marcus Garvey and Haile Selassie Garvey was a Jamaican political leader & journalist, active in the Pan-Africanism movement, and believed that blacks wanted their own country, thier culture to be respected, as well as freedom. Died in 1940. Haile Selassie was an Ethiopian emperor 1930-1974, died in 1975. Beginning in Jamaica in the 1930s, the Rastafari movement perceived him as a messianic figure who will lead a future golden age of eternal peace, righteousness, and prosperity. 1976 assassination attempt on Marley at his home, thought to be politically motivated His music and influence was heard and felt across the world. Marley died of cancer in 1981
