Research Methods Qualitative Paradigm Dr. Paula Charbonneau-Gowdy

Interviewing…

Why do we use it?

How do we begin?

Interview Activity… 1. Develop 4-5 interview questions. 2. Interview a classmate. 3. Analyze the strategies of others. 4. Discussion.

Example interviewing.. Look for effective strategies by watching or listening to the following…... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Goviy30NTug http://www.cbc.ca/player/search.html?q=sunday+edition&s= Last week’s interview: http://www.cbc.ca/player/Radio/The+Sunday+Edition/ID/26688844 21/

Group Activity – Planning a Research Design What are the ways that I can get at the stories? What ways can I interact with participants to find answers to the questions I pose?

Planning a Research Design Or perhaps how can I respond to the transformations I am envisaging?

Group Activity – Planning a Research Design What is my timeframe? Phase 1? Phase 2? Who are my participants?

Phase Questions Data Sources Examples   1 Oct. - Dec. 2013 1.What is the nature of the previous literacy experiences of the participants and how do they perceive their competencies at the outset of the research study? 2.How does the reading program influence, if at all, the reading habits of the participant pre-service teachers and their use of language, in this case English? 3.How does the reading program affect their identities as learners, future teachers and as individuals? -Individual face-to face or Skype interview notes -Group interview recordings -Participant weekly writing journals -Documents -Field Notes -Observations Weekly guided 45-60 minute interviews held with each participant (50 hours) 4 group interviews held at regular intervals over the first phase of the study Weekly journals written by each participant (260 pages) based on reading on Internet, as part of their course requirements. Group Activity – Planning a Research Design What kinds of data do I expect to access? How will I organize the data? How will I analyze the data?

Group Activity – Planning a Research Design When and what will I do with that analysis?
