Presentation transcript:

Types of Maps Objective: 1. Define, identify and use physical maps, political maps, topographical maps, and economic or resource maps. 2. Describe the differences between the 4 different types.

Physical Map Physical Maps: A physical map shows the physical features of an area, such as mountains, rivers, and lakes. Earth’s geographic forms are in color. Blue shows?  Different colors show? Hint- You use the SCALE

What makes this a physical map?

Political Map A Political Map shows countries, states, capitals, counties, cities, and towns that are political units. The units are united under a government. Who determines the lines? How do you tell if it is a capital?

What makes this a political map?

How do you tell the difference! How to tell the difference between a physical and political map: Identify what the map is showing. Ask: Is the main focus of the map made by humans or nature? Humans? ➔ Political Map Nature? ➔ Physical Map

Topographic Maps A Topographic Map Some include lines and shows the shape and elevation of an area. Lines close together indicate steep terrain. Lines far apart show indicate flat terrain. What are some reasons you’d want to know if the terrain was steep or flat?

Topographic Maps

Economic or Resource Maps Resource maps show the natural resources or economic activity found in a region. Use the map key and symbols to see the locations of resources. What do the symbols with a lightning bolt refer to? What type of resources is this map showing?

Economic or Resource Map What does this map show? What crops do you see that are grown in this area? What does the blue areas show?

Title Title: The title tells you what kind of information the map is showing. Use the title of this map to answer the following question: What does this map show?

The Key or Legend Key: The key lists and explains the symbols, colors, and lines used on the map. The key is sometimes called a legend. Can a brave student come up here and circle the KEY on our map. Use the legend on the map to answer the following question: Is section 103 on the floor, plaza, club, or terrace?

Scale Scale: The scale shows the relationship between map measurements and actual distances on the earth. By laying a ruler along the scale, you can calculate how many miles or kilometers are represented per inch or centimeter. What measurement tool do you think we need to use in order to find the distance of things on a map?

Scale What is the same between a scale that measures your weight and a scale on a map?  What is different?

Compass Rose Compass Rose: The compass rose shows directions. The Cardinal Directions: north (N), south (S), east (E), and west (W). The Ordinal Directions: northeast (NE), northwest (NW), southeast (SE), and southwest (SW).

Compass Rose Use the compass rose and this map to answer. Which is farther north: Memphis International Airport or Heartbreak Hotel? Step 1: Find both of the places. Step 2: Find the Compass Rose Step 3: Solve!

What part of the map tells you what the Map is about? Looking at the map, what is this map about?

What did you use to find your answer? What does this symbol represent? What did you use to find your answer?
