Fig. 1 Proposed roles of microRNA-155 (miR-155) in alcoholic liver disease (ALD). In a mouse model of ALD, miR-155 was found to be upregulated in hepatocytes and liver macrophages (Kupffer cells). By comparing wild-type (WT) and miR-155-deficient (KO) mice, Bala and coworkers revealed a central functional role of miR-155 for controlling lipid metabolism in hepatocytes and pro-inflammatory (M1) polarization in macrophages, ultimately promoting steatosis, hepatitis and fibrosis.
