Learning Goals By the end of class today, I will be able to: Create models to represent force and motion My models will demonstrate how input force, mass, and speed affect the movement of an object In order to complete this objective, I will need to: Understand why models are used and how to construct one Investigate how input force, mass, and speed affect the movement of an object

How Pushy is the Straw? Procedure Stretch a rubber band around the middle of the cover of a textbook Hold the book in place while you push the straw back about 10 cm Once you have pushed the straw back 10 cm, let go of the book and straw

Speed Patrol Procedure Each group will have one item from the list (marble; coin; ball; blown balloon; tape roll; toy car; textbook). One representative from each group will position their object (marble/coin) at the top of the ramp. Release the object and let it roll down the ramp. Record the speed traveled by each object from fastest to slowest (1-slowest to 7-fastest) How does the mass of the object affect its speed? What forces are applied?

The Wet Bomb Moisten tissue paper with water and use it to plug the hole in the top of a water bottle. Squeeze the bottle and observe what happens. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with a larger piece of moistened tissue paper. Compare the results

The Massive Push Race Competition 2 student volunteers (1 of small mass and one of larger mass) each sit on a chair with tennis balls on the legs. 2 other student volunteers will push the chairs and observe which chair reached the opposite end of the classroom quicker. Volunteers will then switch positions; however this time, the chairs will be pulled.

What is Speed? Speed is a measure of how fast an object moves over a distance (ex. meters) in a particular time (ex. seconds) Speed is a rate of change of the position of an object or how far something will move in an amount of time

What is Speed? Speed does not necessarily mean something is moving quickly Speed is simply a description of how fast something is moving

What is Force? A force is a push or a pull on an object A force can speed up, slow down, or change the direction of an object

How does Force Affect Speed? If an object is in motion and a force is applied to it in the direction of the motion, the object will speed up If an object is in motion and a force is applied to it in the opposite direction of the motion, the object will slow down If an object is in motion and an equal force is applied to it, then the object will come to a stop

How does Force affect Direction? If an object is in motion or at rest, applying a great enough force can cause the object to change direction Think of a baseball player hitting a homerun, the ball is pitched in one direction and the force the of the batter hitting the ball is great enough to change the direction of the ball.

What is Mass? Remember that mass is the measure of the amount of matter an object has ALL objects are made of matter therefore all objects have mass Mass IS NOT simply how much an object weighs

How does Mass affect motion? In order to change the speed of an object with great mass, more force has to be applied to that object If Mr. Peterson drives a Mini Cooper and Mrs. Mosby drives a Monster Truck, it is going to take Mr. Peterson less force to move and stop his car because it has less mass

How does Mass affect motion? When it comes to changing the direction of an object, there is less force necessary to change the direction of an object with less mass More force is needed to change direction for an object with greater mass
