Identify Community Need You Career Identify Community Need Problem Solve Endeavor Major It’s All in the Details Explain what you’re passionate about. Tell us why you chose your major & how it ties in to what you want to do within your career. Identify a need within your community & problem solve to come up with a solution. Talking about all of these things within your application should support what you say in your endeavor essay. Endeavor essay is the most heavily weighted portion of the application. Tying all of these things together within your application and essay will strengthen your application.

Get a Head Start Draft a sample biography Draft your short & long term goals Draft a list of your areas of service & volunteerism Draft an endeavor essay Line up two individuals to serve as recommenders Bank responses in a scholarship resume

Making Your Application Shine Provide details when explaining your involvement. Use numbers. Do research and include examples. Do not answer N/A or leave fields blank. People who “don’t have time” are not considered. Do not fudge facts. Avoid writing a sob story. Remember, judges are human beings, too.

Letters of Recommendation Identify someone who knows you well. Pay attention to the purpose of the recommendation and read the instructions. Speak to recommenders early. Do not ask family, friends or peers to write your recommendation. Provide the recommender with a copy of your application and/or a summary of your campus and community involvement. Let the recommender know details about the scholarship to help them customize responses. Request a copy. Send a thank you note.

Essays Use details and be specific. Address the question prompt. Understand the instructions. Read all sections before writing. Research. Write sample paragraphs to finesse before finalizing your application. Ask others to review, proofread and critique. Proofread, proofread, and then PROOFREAD some more.

Online Application Tips Don’t procrastinate. Allow yourself time to log back in to the application to revise your content. Start the application early to avoid or resolve technical issues. Give recommenders the courtesy of time. Save often and submit when you’ve finalized your application. Print a copy for your records.
