Public Schools of North Carolina Credit by Demonstrated mastery SBE GCS-M-001.13 Student and Parent Information “The mission of the Randolph County School System is to maximize educational opportunities for every student by focusing on continuous improvement and having high expectations for students and staff, while preparing students for multiple options to be competitive in a diverse 21st Century global society.”

Credit by Demonstrated mastery Adopted SBE-GCS-M-001 To ensure students have personalized learning in our public schools to optimally grow and have effective seat time learn new content. To ensure there is a clear process for earning course credit without seat-time or traditional learning experience. To respond to needs of students, families, AIG community, school personnel and leadership.

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery For Whom? Any North Carolina public school student who is able to show a deep understanding of the content without seat-time and classroom learning experience (originally grades 6-12)- RCSS has opted to implement only for grades 9-12. Intended as opportunity for individual students, not just highly advanced students, and not cohorts of children. Eventually expand to permit use of the conceptual framework for other students.

How ? Multi Phase Assessment Process

Student /Parent Process

The following RCSS courses will be available for the CDM option for 2016-2017 (placement for 2017-2018) English I, II , III and IV World History, American History I and II, Civics and Economics Physics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, and Astronomy NCMath 1, 2 and 3, AFM and Discrete Math World Languages Levels I and II for Spanish, French and Chinese Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Theatre Levels I and II Level I Career and Technical Education Courses Select Level II Career and Technical Education Courses- See your School Counselor or CDC

Phase I Testing Date and Location Tentative Date: Saturday, February 25, 2017 Randleman High School 8:30 am Application must be returned to student’s principal no later than February 10th, 2017.

Additional Considerations AP Exams- if a student makes a 3 or higher on the AP English Language and Composition or AP English and Composition exam without taking the course, this satisfies Phase I for English III or English IV. Students can CDM standard classes only (no Honors or AP courses) Does not affect GPA as they receive a PASS only No penalties for unsuccessful attempt There may be issues with the NCAA Clearinghouse with Athletic Eligibility

Long Term Effects… Advanced Courses through Grade 12 Meet with your school counselor-develop a long term plan. What are your options for course selections? College and Career Promise opportunities. Meet with your Career Development Coordinator (CDC) to develop a career pathway to meet your college/career readiness goals. Athletics and Extra-curricular Activities CDM courses do not count in Athletic eligibility totals. GPA and Quality Points CDM courses do not count in GPA and do not earn quality points. Opportunity for Early Graduation

What are the options for 8th graders? Middle School Parents and students should meet with counselors to discuss options regarding CDM. This process is not intended for all students, carefully consideration should be given. 8th graders may choose to attempt CDM this spring for courses for 9th grade. They may also opt to wait until the fall cycle of CDM and attempt CDM for their spring semester courses at that time. They will have an additional opportunity in the fall for the spring semester.

What will be the order of science course my student will take in high school if they “CDM” out of Biology Possible Options: (Standard and Honors) Earth and Environmental Science Physics Chemistry Physical Science Advanced Placement Courses AP Biology AP Chemistry AP Environmental Science AP Physics I
