What is CAD? Computer-aided Design Using software to design and test a design before starting manufacturing Types: 2d and 3d. Manufactures: Solidworks, Autodesk, Tinkercad (just a few)

Engineering Process

Why use CAD? It allows students to quickly go through the engineering process over and over to perfect their designs. It allows testing before materials are used. It is more precise than other methods. It is a section in the engineering notebook (part of the score)

2D CAD Advantages Can use almost any drawing program. Simple to use and create designs. Can use almost any computer, tablet or device. Designs can be done very quickly.

2D CAD Disadvantages Can not see the final product as a whole device. Can not be used for testing. Harder to find flaws in the design.

3D CAD Advantages Can see the complete design before starting to create part. Can test the design in software. Can test real physics in most software. Can find most design problems and fix them before manufacturing begins.

3D CAD Disadvantages Needs more powerful computers with 3d video cards. Harder to create the parts, more training and skill is required. Sometimes hard to put the whole machine together.

Views  Isometric view, a 2d view of the object typically, top, front and side.

Views Orthographic view, is a 3d view of the object.

So how do we create something? Create a 2d drawing such as a square.

Creating, cont. Next we extrude (give height to the object)

Creating, cont Now we modify the simple object we created.

Creating, cont. And some more.
