Numbers and Operations Welcome to the World of Integers!

Page 1 Of Survival Guide

What are integers? Integers are a group of numbers that include positive numbers, negative numbers and zero. Integers have no upper bound or lower bound which means that range from negative infinity to positive infinity.

What are integers? When you subtract two positive numbers (numbers larger than zero), it is possible to get an answer of zero. Zero is neither ______ nor a ______ number.

What are integers? Negative integers are numbers that are ______ than zero. Positive integers are numbers that are ______ than zero.

Real World Examples Sports – Gain and lose yards in a football game Money – deposit and withdraw money Weather – Above and below zero Geography – Above and below sea level

Positive Numbers Negative Numbers The number line is a line labeled with the integers. Numbers to the right of zero are positive , and numbers to the left of zero are negative. Positive Numbers Negative Numbers

INTEGER OPERATIONS

Adding Integers Different Signs

Adding Integers! READY? OK! If the signs are the same, you add the numbers and keep the same sign! If the signs are different, you find the difference and keep the bigger sign!

How do you subtract integers? Subtracting Integers How do you subtract integers? ADD THE OPPOSITE!

Multiplying Integers NO

Dividing Integers NO

Rational Numbers Any number that can be written as a ration/fraction; decimals are terminating Example 2/5 1/4 Non-Example 1/3 2/3

Ordering Rational Numbers Order numbers from least to greatest Put these numbers in order from least to greatest: 1. .5, .06, .12, .6, .78, .59 2. ½, ¾, 3/5

Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, Dividing Fractions with like denominators EX: 3/7 + 2/7 Fractions with unlike denominators EX: 1/6 + ¾ Decimals EX: 36.6 / .6

PEMDAS P E M D A S EX: (-2 + 4) – 3 – 8 ÷ 4 x 5 +12 =

ABSOLUTE VALUE |6| = |-5| = |0| = A number’s DISTANCE from zero… The symbol for absolute value is | |. |6| =  |-5| =  |0| =

Individual Class Work Now is your chance to show your knowledge. By answering questions 1-8 in the numbers and operations section of your survivor guide with a team average of 85% or better, your tribe will move to the next checkpoint and earn rights to participate in today’s “Tribal Challenge” Remember individual means no discussion is allowed with tribe mates.
