What is Human Anatomy and Physiology?

Human Anatomy: The study of the structure and shape of the body and its parts with their relationships.

Human Physiology: The study of how the body parts work and function together.

Body composition: Atom Cells Tissue Organ Organ system Organism

There are 11 organ systems that make up the human body:

I. Integumentary system: Makes up our skin Water proof Regulates body temperature Protection from disease Area to receive stimulus-nerve receptors

II. Skeletal system: Made up of bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and joints Gives framework for muscle attachment and support Protection-skull protects the brain Storage Hematopoiesis-formation of blood cells

III. Muscular system: Movement of our body Movement of body fluids-blood, urine and food Contract to shorten and relax to lengthen

IV. Nervous system: Body’s control system Responds to stimuli Very fast moving to response and action

V. Endocrine system: Controls body systems by release of hormones Very slow action Regulates other processes: cell growth, reproduction and food use Controls other structures: pituitary, thymus, thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes, pineal and adrenal glands

VI. Circulatory system: Transport and delivery system Made up of the cardiovascular system (heart & blood vessels) and lymphatic system (lymph nodes & lymphatic vessels) Spleen and tonsils are also a part of this system Cleans the blood, moves oxygen, nutrients, hormones, wastes, and toxins Helps fight foreign invaders-WBC

VII. Respiratory system: Supplies oxygen and removes carbon dioxide Made up of nasal passages, larynx, lungs, pharynx, tracheobronchi and alveoli

VIII. Digestive system: Tube from mouth to anus Breaks down food and delivers the products to the blood Digestive organ-liver produces bile to reduce fats Pancreas makes digestive enzymes

IV. Urinary system: Maintains body’s water and salt balance Removes nitrogen containing wastes (poisons) from the blood and flushes them out of the body (excretory system)

X. Reproductive system: Produce offspring
