Careers for the 21st Century Finding your Future

Your Life is an organisation that is working hard to ensure that young people are aware of the possibilities studying STEM subjects can lead to

Your Life is supported by some pretty big companies who understand the importance of STEM, and have graduate, apprentice and school leaver roles available for you.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO?.... LIKE IT, OR NOT… … the decisions you make now can have an impact on your future and what career you eventually choose. The aim of this session is to inform students of the different options available to them, post compulsory education. Through one-to-one conversations with Your Life ambassadors and employees of their sponsors, your students will have the opportunity to explore their future options.

STEM Subjects Don’t just Lead to Lab Work They can lead to a wide range of careers, from entertainment to space exploration and fashion

SO, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO…? ENGINEER PHYSIOTHERAPIST ENTREPRENEUR PARAMEDIC JOURNALIST BUSINESS ANALYST PHOTOGRAPHER DOCTOR ASTRONOMER IT SPECIALIST FASHION DESIGNER BANKER LECTURER DIGITAL PROGRAMMER CONSULTANT TEACHER

You may even have a job that isn’t invented yet Experts suggest that by 2030 over 60% of us will have jobs that don’t currently exist Tele-surgeon Localiser Sustainable Power Innovator Augmented Reality Architect Healthcare Navigator Digital Currency Adviser Urban Farmer Big Data Wrangler Aesthetician Systems Tangiliser

The future will be more tech and digital focused than ever before, and as a STEM graduate you would be helping solve some of the world’s biggest problems. Big employers are looking for people like you to fill those roles…

During this session you will Watch a short video to introduce the sector Use Future Finder (a careers guidance app) to determine what career your subject choices could lead to Be assigned to chat with an individual already in a STEM career, and be able to ask questions about the work that they do and how they got to where they are now Learn more about the different types jobs that are available to you after you finish school

WATCH… Click here You may wish to watch this short video at the end of the session just to ensure you have enough time.

Some of the companies taking part today…

SO, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW? Suggested Group Activity: In small groups or as a class have a think about the types of questions you might want to ask. Students may want to write these down. You may have students taking part who aren’t so keen on the sector - how can they make the most of this session and the online chat? It’s still a great opportunity to get some tips or advice - could they ask about interview tips, or how the person they’re talking to decided what subjects to choose for example?

SOME GOOD QUESTIONS TO ASK… What did you study in school? What do you do in your day-to-day job? How did you get your job? What was your journey? What characteristics do I need to succeed? How important are the subjects I study? Tell me an interesting fact about you…

In Future Finder you will: So before you start chatting let’s take a quick look at Future Finder. Future Finder is a tool that’s been designed to help you figure out your next steps. In Future Finder you will: Input a combination of A Levels you are considering to reveal a list of jobs you could do, OR enter a job you are interested in to see which A Levels are suggested Use the personality profile to find out what jobs best suit your character Get inspired! Based on your preferences, the app uses artificial intelligence to provide you with relevant answers… so the more you use it the better it gets!

Why is this useful? Using the combination of Future Finder and speaking to one of our volunteers, we hope that you will be inspired to think differently about your future, inform you of the possibilities of studying STEM subjects and help make the best decision for you and your future.

https://futurefinder.yourlife.org.uk/ Spend the next 5 minutes having a go at using Future Finder. It’s been designed to help you. You can access it here: https://futurefinder.yourlife.org.uk/ Suggest at this point your students have a play around with the Future Finder app. Accessible here - https://futurefinder.yourlife.org.uk/. You may wish to email this link to your students in advance of the session

SO YOU’RE ABOUT TO START YOUR CAREERS CONVERSATION! REMEMBER! EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. We’ve chosen these volunteers because they have all taken different paths to get them to where they are today. Each volunteer has an interesting story to tell, so make the most of this opportunity to learn about them!

PLEASE HELP US IMPROVE OUR SERVICE ONE LAST THING!!... PLEASE HELP US IMPROVE OUR SERVICE By filling in both the pre and post-chat surveys, we’ll be able to improve our offer for other students just like you. Please ensure to take five minutes at the end of the chat to answer the survey questions. Please encourage students to fill in the post-chat survey and not to just close the window once they have finished! This will indefinitely improve our service and allow us to feedback valuable information to our clients.
