Original bank opened in NYC and later moved to DC. Eventually 37 branches in 17 states with 70,000 depositors & $57,000,000. Closed in 1874 due to mismanagement, fraud, & other events Records from 29 of 37 branches survived. Most lost 2/5th of deposits. Many never claimed. Considerable personal information required to make a deposit Information varied by year and branch F Freedman's Bank Records is a great source for genealogists researching their African American heritage because of the amount of personal information recorded for each individual in it.
