EDGAR ALLAN POE [1809-1849] * Critic, Poet, & Author * Published his 1st book of poetry in 1827 (age 18) * Considered the father of the modern detective story * One of the first American authors to write popular short stories * Most of his subject matter dealt with death and the grotesque (creepy stuff).

“The Cask of Amontillado” * Setting is Venice, Italy, during carnival; Mid- 1800s First published in 1846 Poe creates a mood of suspense Not a traditional literary protagonist Only two characters: Montresor (narrator) & Fortunato What POV is “TCOA” told in? 1st Person POV

New LITERARY TERMS TO KNOW Suspense: a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. Repetition: simple repeating of a word, within a sentence, or a line of text, in order to provide emphasis. Onomatopoeia: the creation of words that imitate natural sounds.

LITERARY TERMS You Should Already Know Tone: what the author (rather than the reader) feels about the subject. Mood: the atmosphere of a piece of writing; it’s the emotions a selection arouses in a reader. Imagery: an author's use of vivid and descriptive language to add depth to their work. It appeals to human senses.

LITERARY TERMS You Should Already Know Irony: Three types? Dramatic, Verbal, & Situational Irony Point of View: the position of the narrator in relation to the story. What are the different points of view? How are they different? Setting: the locale or period in which the action of a novel, play, film, etc., takes place.

Appearance vs. Reality Pay very close attention to what appears to be happening and what is actually happening in this story. You will also see types of irony presented in this tale. Pay close attention to the literary elements used. These literary elements create the disconnect between appearance and reality!
