Mediterranean diet Inspired by the dietary patterns of Greece, Southern Italy, Spain and Portugal in the 1940s and 1950s. There is tentative evidence that the Mediterranean diet lowers the risk of heart disease and early death Olive oil legumes Unrefined cereals Fruits and vegetables Fish and some meat Moderate wine consumption

Atlantic Diet However, more than a Mediterranean diet, Portugal has an Atlantic Diet, based on a much higher consumption of fish compared to other Mediterranean countries. The Southern European Atlantic Diet is the traditional diet of Northern Portugal and Galicia (Spain), and has been associated with a lower risk of non-fatal acute myocardial infarction.

Curiosities Tea was first introduced to Portuguese priests and merchants in China during the 16th century… The marriage of King Charles II in 1662 to the Portuguese princess Catarina de Bragança also brought the tea drinking habit to court. The Food Balance Wheel suggests an alternate interpretation of the USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommendations for balanced eating and it was created in Portugal in 1977!
