Agenda High School Structure Student Insurance SD#73 Culture of Athletics Alcohol & Drug Policy 606.2 Codes of Conduct Communicating with Coaches Playing time Hardship Policy 506.6 Parent Handouts You can help us Individual Team Meetings

High School Sport Structure We are a member of the West Okanagan Valley Schools Athletic Association (Kamloops and outlying areas) The W.O.V.S.A.A is a part of the O.V.S.A.A (Okanagan Valley Schools Athletic Association ) BC School Sports is our governing body

Student Athlete Eligibility Regulated by BC School Sports Students have 5 years of eligibility. It is established on Sept 1 of your grade 8 year. After the first day of grade 9 players home schools are established. For more details please refer to the BCSS Web site: Click here

Student Accident Insurance Plan Student’s are only covered by your insurance, not the School District. Accidents do happen (two dental incidents in the last 5 years). Students can purchase insurance through Kid’s Plus Pamphlets were sent home the first week of school. If you didn’t get one, you can get a pamphlet from the main office.

Culture of Athletics We believe in creating a positive culture of athletics which provides the development of the whole person. We believe it’s important for all involved – students athletes, coaches, parents and spectators to conduct themselves in a manner that is responsible, respectful and encouraging to those around us.

Alcohol and other Drug Policy 606.2 The board of education believes there is no place for alcohol or drugs in sports. An athlete is a student who is playing a sport and has signed an athletic contract. Any Athlete who violates Policy 606.1 at any athletic or non-athletic event, under the jurisdiction of the District, or under the jurisdiction of any other school district, will be suspended from participation in the athletic program for up to one calendar year from the date of violation. Policy 606.2 outlines how suspensions are determined. ** Before an athlete is reinstated there must be a meeting with the parent/guardian, AD and administrator.

Student-Athlete Code of Conduct The actions of a student-athlete are a reflection of themselves, their team, their school and their community. Student-athletes must remember that their participation in school sport is a privilege, not a right. Student-athletes shall: 1.0 Treat Everyone with Respect 2.0 Exercise Self Control at all Times 3.0 Play Fair 4.0 Abide by School District NO 73. Policy 606.2 “Alcohol and Other Drugs - Student Athletes.”

Spectator Code of Conduct Please be respectful and encouraging in your approach to all athletes, officials, coaches and fellow spectators. Note: Posters on gym doors and walls.

Coaches Code of Conduct BC School Sports Coaches Code of Conduct Coaches have to sign the Code of Conduct form. http://www.bcschoolsports.ca/sites/default/files/Coach's%20Code%20of%20Conduct.pdf

Communicating with Coaches Communicating with coaches is welcomed however the timing is critical. Before, during or right after a game might not be the optimal time to have the discussion Talk to your son or daughter 1st. Emails are often written in anger and/or misunderstood. If you are upset or frustrated please delay the discussion a day and then set up a meeting to see the coach.

Playing Time Determined at the discretion of the coach Is not guaranteed to be equal at any level Coaches will endeavor to communicate how much time each player can expect to play Please give coaches the benefit of the doubt Encourage parents/guardians/players to understand that a player’s value to their team is much more than the amount time they play

Hardship Policy 506.6 No student will be denied the opportunity to participate in an activity because of financial hardship Parent / Guardian should contact the Principal to make an appointment. The arrangements are confidential, respectful and discreet.

Parent Forms Forms that parents need to fill out: Athletic Contract (required for every sport, every year). Please read through completely. Medical Consent form Low Risk Field Trip forms Parent Acknowledgment form Volunteer driver form Forms are located on Sa-Hali’s Athletics' Website

How you can help us? Be part of the solution, not the problem. Leave the reffing to the refs, coaching to the coaches. Encourage positivity in stands/social media Studies show that kids dread the ride and the coaching that takes place in the vehicle from their parents. Studies also show kids want to hear: “I love watching you play.” - ( or your team) “I am proud of you.” If they don’t play very much, encourage/praise them for being supportive of their teammates and engaged in the game. Instead of cheering and using player names, replace with Sabres or Sa-Hali. Be engaged. Put your cell phone away. Enjoy the time watching the team. 5 years goes by fast.
