Clear Pathways

Pathway Partners

Teacher Education Advisory Group To Meet annually High Schools Community Partner Groups CSUSM MiraCosta Palomar

Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) Defined Goal: Produce students who have earned their B.A. and teaching credential within 4-4.5 years by creating a pathway in which students begin taking credential classes in their junior year.

Purpose of the ITEP Accessibility: Clear pathway(s) and information readily available and articulated between institutions. Flexibility: Scheduling that supports the non-traditional student as well as the traditional student. Diversity: Target diverse students in recruitment and remove barriers that often stop these students. Quality: Four years does not mean less. Quantity does not equal quality. Accessibility: Pathway begins in HS for some, CC or freshmen for others. We can’t wait until students are juniors or seniors to be sure they have taken the right courses and obtained CBEST, fingerprint clearances, etc., all of which can be barriers. Flexibility: Includes mentoring and nurturing throughout the pipeline. Diversity: Recruit Latino students from undergraduate programs and CC. Recruit bilingual teachers from CAMP and ACES programs. Start in High School Quality: It is up to us to include what is most important for teachers to be able to think, perform, and care for the students they will teach. Efficiency is a good thing.

Goal: Smooth teacher pipeline and pathway(4-4.5 years) ITEP will allow students to earn both their LBST B.A. and their teaching credential Liberal Studies (LBST) Major to become an Elementary Subject Matter (ESM) Waiver Program S’17 application preparation and submission to CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing approval LBST Program Change paperwork preparation and submission for campus curriculum committee approval Array of Teaching Credentials: Multiple Subject, Special Education, Bilingual, SS Foundational Math and Foundational Science

Key Components: Teacher Preparation Pipeline Using available Financial Incentives, e.g. TEACH Grant Articulation Agreements: LBST Lower Division Transfer Pattern (LDTP) Update. Need to be sure LDTP classes are offered in a regular sequence in CCs and CSUSM undergrad so that students can complete in 2 years. Is there a way to be able to “save seats” for teacher educators?  Advising: Get in early and be sure we know who want to be teachers. Freshmen need to know what courses to take. Use the CSUSM Degree Planner “Degree, Set, Go” Initiative Recruitment: Latino Summer Teacher Academy, HS YouthTeach2Learn, freshmen orientation

ITEP Grant Reporting: Short Term A description of the 4-4.5 year program with updates regarding implementation and adjustments in of depths of study. Teacher Pathway Planners and transfer agreements Meeting notes

ITEP Assessment: Long Term Tracking of students from High School Summer Academies, Teachers Rising Chapters, CC Transfer students on the Teacher Education Pathway.  Tracking will include retention and completion data.

ITEP Assessment: Long Term A yearly survey conducted through the The Regional Teacher Pathway Advisory Board will be distributed to advisors and ITEP faculty from Community Colleges and CSUSM to garner feedback on implementation and suggestions for program improvement. This survey, along with discussions at the Advisory Board meetings will address challenges and lessons learned from the planning and implementation process.

ITEP Assessment: Long Term Program Completer surveys issued and analyzed through the CSU’s Center for Teacher Quality will be used to compare the ITEP program with other credential programs at CSUSM and other institutions to ensure quality. Those surveys are described below
