Year 10 Maths Information Evening Nicola Fareham n.fareham@grange.outwood.com Head of Department Chris Gibson c.gibson@grange.outwood.com Acting Key Stage 4 Coordinator

Why are we having an information evening? To run through the GCSE specification To keep you informed of important dates, To let you know what is happening in your child’s Maths lesson.

Important Exam Dates All students in Year 10 will sit their GCSE Maths exam at the end of Year 11. Students are either working towards the Foundation (G-C) or Higher (D-A*) exam depending on their ability. These results will help towards determining whether or not a student will be required to study Option Maths in Year 11.

Internal Assessments Throughout the year there will be numerous internal assessments. These will be used to help predict final GCSE scores which will appear on your child’s Praising Stars report. These will take place during the following weeks w/c 24 Nov w/c 19 Jan w/c 9 Mar – Full Mock Examination w/c 22 June – Full Mock Examination These assessments sometimes lead to set changes for some students so they are working with other students with similar ability to themselves.

‘Corridor of Delight’ All students will receive a grade tracker showing them whether or not they are on the right path to making good progress.

Tracking Progress All students will receive a sticker for their books where they can record their progress and refer to it.

What else are we doing? Enrichments every night apart from Tuesday SLT support in lessons One-to-one mentoring Intervention from the class teacher Revision booklets from Edexcel Mathswatch CD Option Maths lessons

Why Option Maths? Some students are selected to do Option Maths in Year 11. Achieving a C grade or above in Maths will give our students the best life chances. Since Option Maths has started yearly results have increased dramatically. We know that without Option Maths the likelihood of students achieving a C grade would fall significantly. Practising Maths improves our students’ retention of knowledge.

Option Maths Selection Process After Jan 2015 Assessment students will be provisionally selected. Data from the last three assessments will be used to decide whether Option is required. Previous students in similar positions have not gone on to achieve a C grade. One Option choice is provisionally removed in the place of Option Maths. After the June examinations setting, tier and Option Maths will be decided on. The majority of students sitting the Foundation tier will study Option.

Is it confirmed? In March all students will be given material to revise from in preparation for the June exams. Some provisionally selected students worked hard as they didn’t want to study Option in year 11. 2 students did not achieve what was expected of them so were allocated Option despite not being provisionally selected.

Homework Homework will be set as in previous years using www.mymaths.co.uk Login: outwood Password: equilateral Every student has one week to complete their homework. This is set on MyMaths. All teachers in the department provide enrichments after school to give students support with their homework. We will comment and put a sticker in planners when homework is not completed, set a detention and this will follow the academy homework policy.

What can your child do? Come to lessons fully equipped and ready to learn -Pen, -Pencil, -Ruler, -Scientific calculator, -Exercise book, -Planner Attend all lessons Complete homework
