Scholarships are available for Navy, Nurse and Marine Option. Cannot have more than 30 college credits (semester hours) if applicant has already graduated from high school.

2014 Selection Profile (2013 data for comparison) High School Class Rank Top 10% -65% (61%) Top 20% -82% (84%) Technical Majors – 88% (94%) GPA – 3.83 (3.78) JROTC – 19% (33%) Military Dependent –40% (47%) SAT: Comp: 1396 (1313) Math: 697 (662) Verbal: 699 (651) Please remember these are averages. The numbers are not designed to discourage applications, but to provide a feel for the competitive nature of the scholarship. On the SAT scores. 800 was the lowest composite score that got an offer (there was only one), but there were 77 who got offers who had scores less than 1100.

Immediate Selection Reservation (ISR) Established in 1994 “to enhance NROTC Program opportunities to enroll and commission top quality minority midshipmen and to allow COMNAVCRUITCOM to aggressively compete in specific market areas.” No longer limited to minorities. College Admission Decisions Selectees Report to College Complete Electronic Application SEP JAN 31 First Selection Board Electronic Application Closes College Signing Deadline Complete all Application Requirements Officer Interviews Medical Exams and Qualification Apply to Colleges All Applicants Notified of Decision Electronic Application Opens MAY JUN APR 1 Completed Package to CNRC Deadline AUG Mar 8 Junior Year Summer following Junior Year Senior Year Summer following Senior Year College Admission Decisions Slide depicts process flow for NROTC. It mirrors the timeline for USNA process. For NROTC, highly competitive applicants who apply early MAY (not will) receive early notification of selection. An August applicant may not receive notification until May. Applicant may apply again if non-selected senior year as long as they have less than 30 college credit hours at time of application. High school data still used.

Application Process Applicant Actions Website: https://www.nrotc.navy.mil Go on-line, complete and submit electronic application Electronic application includes: Personal data Activities (athletic and non-athletic) Essay questions Print and sign the Statement of Understanding, Drug and Debarment Statements Provide names and school addresses of 2 teachers and counselor Must include math teacher and a teacher, counselor, coach or employer (science vice math for nurse option applicants) Release SAT/ACT test scores to NROTC Program (Code 0656) Get an Applicant Fitness Assessment Form completed Complete additional forms and actions as requested by recruiter Follow-up on progress of application – contact recruiter Online application hints: be thorough, project for senior year, spell check, expound on activities in the other block especially if activity is not represented in the application. Athletic activities should also include teams/sports they may be doing outside of the school setting – expound in “other” block. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Select teachers to provide evaluations carefully. If a member of NJROTC, board expects Senior Naval Science Instructor or one of the other staff members to complete the 3rd teacher evaluation or to send a separate letter of recommendation. If not, negative assessment is assumed. When possible, NJROTC staff should provide guidance and advice on completing the application (i.e. tips on good essay writing, documenting all activities).

Advice for applicants https://www.nrotc.navy.mil Issues considered by the Board: Character Leadership Athletics Academics Service If Selected for scholarship, get into a school where you can use it! Plan Early, Plan Often. Be thorough and complete in application Project activities for senior year Detail activities not listed in application Research and Apply to all college choices (5) and have a back up college (or two). Do not wait for selection decision to apply to colleges Make sure applications is filled out completely. Answer the essay questions in completely. Should consist of two or three paragraphs for each question (about 250- 500 words). There are two areas for NJROTC One for being a member One for leadership Make sure both are marked – or at least mark the membership one. If they are also doing Sea Cadets or Civil Air Patrol – make sure they put the dates of membership in the remarks section. If they have already graduated from high school, tell us what they are doing now. Work, school, both, etc. This is especially important for those that reapply in that first semester of college. 4. Get into a school where we you can use the scholarship! Every year there are situations where scholarships were awarded, but the individuals didn’t get accepted to any schools due to unrealistic expectations or procrastination. Poor planning  Poor results. **************************Advice for Parents and Advisors in the Audience****************************************** 1. Research colleges thoroughly. NROTC is a national organization with university affiliates in 38 states. Widen the search aperture. 2. Update school preferences on application as required through the Selection or Placement offices. Getting admitted to a school academically is a separate process from getting the scholarship. Make sure both are aligned. Plan early and plan often. 3. Manage Expectations. Every Scholarship Recipient does not get their top choice school. ISR and ASR included.
