Objective EE400D – ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN SEMINAR AND PROJECT A Course on The Engineering Method Designed to meet Department of Electrical Engineering and ABET Course Objectives.

The Engineering Method

ANCILLARY OBJECTIVES “I’m not quite sure what were supposed to be learning but I learned a whole lot with respect to designing and creating what was once just an idea” S’12 400D Student Comment Learn (actually simulate) how a real world project is implemented. Take individual responsibility and be accountable for your work. Probably learn the consequences of not staying on schedule. Have the resources to have a successful capstone design experience. Be challenged to think about your career path and to place a high value on it. Be given the chance to learn about surviving and hopefully thriving in a company before it costs you your job. Learn how (actually simulate) a real world project is implemented and some practical technical skills along the way. Take individual responsibility and be accountable for your work within the context of a company/project. Probably learn the consequences of not staying on schedule. Have the resources to have a successful capstone design experience. Be challenged to think about your career path and to place a high value on it. Be given the chance to learn about surviving and hopefully thriving in a company before it costs you your job.

Project Management Structures Project Teams – Typical Lab Structure Functional Organization Matrix – Typical Student Employer Our Matrix Organization is now 3 Slides The first slide is "Project Management Structures." Talk about Projects: BiPed, SpiderBot, SegBot, Rosco, UFO Ab-ducted CubeSat The horizontal component of the matrix. The second is "Functional Organization which is the vertical component of the matrix. The third is the unreadable Matrix - Reference that it is a combination of the previous two slides.

Course Outline Week 1 – Welcome TRC Project Management Structures, plus Cover letter & Resume Week 2 – Engineering Method Week 3 – Creativity and Innovation Duncker diagrams Brainstorming and Brainwriting techniques including forced relationship and different point of view. Week 4 – Modeling Trade-off studies, back-of-the-envelope, mathematical, computer simulation, and physical models. Week 5 – Project Plans and Reports Week 1 – Welcome Project Management Structures, Work Breakdown Structure, Cover letter & Resume, Project Set Week 2 – Engineering Method Translate customer expectations (project objectives and mission profile) into level 1 program/project requirements, perform functional and logical decomposition (project WBS), conduct trade-off studies and enter/exit iterative design loop, select a preferred design, communicate results (PDR, CDR), and implement the design. Week 3 – Creativity Level 1 program/project requirements, work breakdown structure (WBS), creativity versus innovation, Duncker diagrams, brainstorming techniques including forced relationship and different point of view. Week 4 – Modeling Level 2 system and subsystem requirements, requirement verification and validation, the design process, including analysis versus synthesis, functional decomposition (system block diagram) and modeling the system. Three common models used in engineering (mathematical, computer simulation, and physical models). Week 5 – Project Plans and Reports Preparing plans, reports and specifications. Drawings, written communications, & presentations. Scheduling and project planning.

Course Outline Week 6 and 7 – Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Demonstrations Week 8 – Planning Your Future Should you place a high value on your career path (two viewpoints)? How to separate yourself from the crowd. Navigating a three dimensional maze. Week 9 – Verification and Validation Week 10 and 11 – Critical Design Review (CDR) Week 12 – Ethics in Engineering and Critical Thinking Expanding project definition beyond the client to include stakeholders. Week 13 and 14 – Project Documentation and Video Week 15 – The Mission Week 6 and 7 – Preliminary Design Review (PDR) Application of the engineering method and PDR outline. Project PDR and demonstrations. Week 8 – Planning Your Future Should you place a high value on your career path (two viewpoints)? How to separate yourself from the crowd. Navigating a three dimensional maze. Week 9 – Verification and Validation How to write a requirement verification and validation plan. Week 10 and 11 – Critical Design Review (CDR) Getting ready for the critical design review: executive summary, system design including system block diagram, experimental results, hardware subsystem design, software design, project status, and demonstration.  Week 12 – Ethics in Engineering and Critical Thinking Expanding project definition beyond the client to include stakeholders. The fundamental canons of ethics. Thinking in terms of the life-cycle of the product (Tesla case study). Catastrophic engineering failures. Week 13 and 14 – Project Documentation and Implementation The final blog post including project deliverables and the video. Week 15 – Housekeeping Return parts on loan, project cost and CSULB reimbursement requests.

Help Wanted EE400D is all about the Engineering Method as practiced within the corporate environment. Faculty members live in an academic versus a corporate environment. Students could benefit from an EE400D course taught (or co-taught) by practicing engineers (preferable Systems Engineers and Managers) Corporations could benefit from access to Graduating Electrical Engineers. Fifteen weeks provides a lot more insight into a future employee than any number of interviews can.
