Hypothetical situations Would you steal office stationery? I’d steal office stationery if my boss fired me. Is this a real situation or you are imagining this? Are you imagining the past, present or future? Where is the condition? Where is the main part?
Conditional 2 I/he/she/they/we + would/wouldn’t do something + if + Past Simple I’d steal office stationery if my boss fired me. I wouldn’t steal office stationery! We can also use might or could instead of would if we are less sure. I might steal office stationery if I was angry with my boss.
If I were you, I wouldn’t drink-drive. If I was in a hurry, I might speed. With I, he, she we can say If I/he/she was or If I/he/she were. Were is more formal and written and was is more spoken.
Pronunciation: I’d STEAL office STATIONERY if my BOSS FIRED me. I WOULDN’T drink-drive even if the POLICE WERE NOT around. I’d SPEED if my FRIEND REALLY NEEDED help.
Practice Make hypothetical sentences using Conditional 2: I (hand in) a wallet if I (find) it in the street. If I ever (lose) my wallet I hope someone (hand) it in. I (steal) paper and pens from my office if my colleagues (do) it, too. I’m not sure… I (take a sickie) if I (be tired). But I (feel) guilty next day. I (park) in a disabled place only if (there are) no other places.
Answers I’d hand in a wallet if I found it in the street. If I ever lost my wallet I hope someone would hand it in. I might steal paper and pens from my office if my colleagues did it, too. I’m not sure.. I’d take a sickie if I was tired. But I’d feel guilty next day. I’d park in a disabled place only if there were no other places.
