ATOMIC STRUCTURE MODEL 9th grade physical science

CLASS AGENDA CLE 3202.1.2 - Describe the structure and arrangement of atomic particles. OBJECTIVE: List the three major subatomic particles and distinguish among their location, charges, and relative masses

Task on the table You will be assigned an element and given materials. You will build a 3-D or flat model representation of one atom of that element Separate colors must be used for each part of the atom. A color key must accompany your product. The atomic model must be scientifically accurate! The model should have the proper number of protons, neutrons and electrons. The atomic model must be properly labeled .

Ticket out the door . You must write a brief summary of how you constructed your model and be ready to present to the class. o The name of the element o How the electrons are arranged around the nucleus o Interesting properties that the element contains. o Who discovered the element o Where the element can be found o What the element is used for

Structure of the Atom Sections 17.1-17.4

Elements are made up of only one type of atom. All elements are listed on the Periodic Table. Each element is represented by its atomic symbol. 8

Some symbols come from the elements name. Atomic Symbols Some symbols come from the elements name. Example: C is for Carbon Others come from the element’s Latin name. Example: Au is for Gold (aurum) Pb is for Lead (plumbum) 9

FORMULAS COMPLETE BOTH SIDES OF WORKSHEET FROM YESTERDAY! NO TALKING!!!! MODELS TOMORROW!!!! PROTONS= ATOMIC NUMBER ELECTRONS=PROTONS NEUTRONS= MASS NUMBER – ATOMIC NUMBER

Some symbols come from the elements name. Atomic Symbols Some symbols come from the elements name. Example: C is for Carbon Others come from the element’s Latin name. Example: Au is for Gold (aurum) Pb is for Lead (plumbum) 11

About Atoms Atoms are so small they can’t be seen with visible light. Photographs of atoms can be seen by a scanning tunneling microscope. The atom is actually made up of smaller subatomic particles. Proton-positive charge Electrons-negative charge Neutrons-no charge 12

The Nucleus Nucleus contains protons and neutrons. The electrons can be found surrounding the nucleus in the electron cloud. Electrons are very far away from the nucleus. There is actually a lot of empty space between the nucleus and electrons. 13

Isotopes The number of protons tells us the atomic number of the atom. The mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Atoms can have different numbers of neutrons. Atoms that have different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes. 14

What do these numbers mean? Mass Number Li 7 Element Symbol 3 Atomic Number How many protons does lithium have? How many neutrons does lithium have?

Atomic Mass The atomic mass is NOT the same as the mass number. The atomic mass shown on the periodic table is an average of all the isotopes of that element. Atomic #=# of protons Electrons=atomic #=# of protons Neutrons=mass # - atomic # 16
