Malala Yousafzai By Zoe Smith

Who is Malala Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani school pupil and education activist from the town of Mingora in the Swat District of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Wikipedia Born: July 12, 1997 (age 17), Mingora, Pakistan Nationality: Pakistani Education: Edgbaston High School Books: I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban Parents: Tor Pekai Yousafzai, Ziauddin Yousafzai Awards: Sakharov Prize, National Malala Peace Prize, More

Why is Malala famous Malala stood up against the government and fought for women’s right to be educated. During this time Malala, her father and many other activist where threatened by the Taliban government. Even with the threats on her life Malala refused to be silenced. She got shot in the head on her way home from school and was not expected to survive!!!

Standing up for education In 2009 the Taliban banned girls from going to school. Many people spoke out against the Taliban government. One of these activists was Malala.

punishments When people started to speak out the new government ha to keep people calm so they could stay in power. First people would be threatened, then if they did not stop they would be assassinated. If a law that the Taliban’s made was broken you would be wiped in front of a crowed. Some family members who were with the victim would even offer to hold them down because they were afraid that if they did not offer they would be next.

Victory After a few years the people of Pakistani ( Malala’s hometown) were able to over overcome the Taliban with peaceful protest.

SHOT!!! On October 9,2012 on Malala’s way home from school the bus was stopped a man asked “ Who is Malala?” two girls were shot along with Malala. The other girls were fine.

Medical treatment After the shooting, Malala was airlifted to a military hospital in Peshawar, where doctors were forced to begin operating after swelling developed in the left portion of her brain, which had been damaged by the bullet when it passed through her head.[41] After a three-hour operation, doctors successfully removed the bullet, which had lodged in her shoulder near her spinal cord. The day following the attack, doctors performed a decompressive craniectomy, in which part of the skull is removed to allow room for the brain to swell.[42] On 11 October 2012, a panel of Pakistani and British doctors decided to move Yousafzai to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology in Rawalpindi.[42] Mumtaz Khan, a doctor, said that she had a 70% chance of survival.[43] Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that Yousafzai would be shifted to Germany, where she could receive the best medical treatment, as soon as she was stable enough to travel. A team of doctors would travel with her, and the government would bear the expenditures of her treatment.[44][45] Doctors reduced Yousafzai's sedation on 13 October, and she moved all four limbs.[46] Offers to treat Yousafzai came from around the world.[47] On 15 October, Yousafzai traveled to the United Kingdom for further treatment, approved by both her doctors and family. Her plane landed in Dubai to refuel and then continued to Birmingham, where she was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, one of the specialties of this hospital being the treatment of military personnel injured in conflict.[48] Yousafzai had come out of her coma by 17 October 2012, was responding well to treatment, and was said to have a good chance of fully recovering without any brain damage.[49] Later updates on 20 and 21 October stated that she was stable, but was still battling an infection.[50] By 8 November, she was photographed sitting up in bed.[51] On 3 January 2013, Yousafzai was discharged from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham to continue her rehabilitation at her family's temporary home in the West Midlands.[52][53] She had a five-hour operation on 2 February to reconstruct her skull and restore her hearing, and was reported in stable condition.[54]

A second life Malala was able to leave the hospital and she is regaining her strength. She continues to speak out to make the world a better place. She has even published an autobiography about her experience. The book is called I am Malala.
