Starter A solution that contains ions What is an electrolyte? What is the purpose of an ion bridge? If a chemical is oxidised, what happens to it? If a chemical is reduced, what happens to it? A solution that contains ions To complete a cell and allow ions to flow The chemical has lost electrons The chemical has gained electrons

Topic 11 Metals

Mercury Aluminium Gold Platinum Tin Copper

Aims of lesson: Discuss examples of metals Identify where metals can be found in the periodic table. Discuss the properties of metals that give them so many uses. Discuss why recycling is so important

In topic 10 we saw that metals allow a flow of electrons in a circuit In topic 10 we saw that metals allow a flow of electrons in a circuit. They are therefore conductors of electricity. However, metals do not only conduct when are solid, but also when they are liquid. This is because as liquids, metals still allow a flow of electrons.

Periodic Table

Properties of Metals The uses of metals are related to their distinctive properties: Density: The mass of a substance in a given volume. Densities can be found on pg 2 of your data booklet. The density of a metal is directly linked to its use, for example which metal is used in aircrafts? Example: Aluminium is used in aircraft because of its low density.

Thermal conduction: Metals are good conductors of heat. Example: Aluminium and stainless steel are used for cooking pans. High melting and boiling points: All metals are solid at room temperature, apart from mercury, which is liquid.

Strength: Some metals are strong, which means that they can last for a long time and are used where strong structures are required. Example: Iron is used to make steel girders

Malleability: Metals are malleable, this mean that they can be moulded into different shape. Give an example where metal has been moulded into a new shape. Example: Design of jewellery or car bodies. Electrical Conductivity: All metals are good conductors of electricity as solids or liquids. Example: Copper and aluminium are used for electrical wiring.

Recycling The world has finite resources of metal elements. This means that the world is running out of certain metals. Therefore, recycling of metals is very important and also good for the environment. What metals do you know about that get recycled? Aluminium cans are often recycled because less energy and fuel is required to recycle aluminium compared with sources new aluminium. Copper is also recycled.

Quick Quiz 1. State two metals we have talked about today? Any two metals from the periodic table 2. Where are metals found in the periodic table? To the left of the zig-zag line 3.State four properties that are common to most metals. Four from: malleable, density, strong, conductors of electricity and heat, high melting and boiling points, for all except one. 4. Which metal is not a solid at room temperature? Mercury
