New Unit: Population Studies L/O: To understand why we study population, and describe how global population has changed over time. Starter: On your iPad use the app ‘Uni Counters’. Write at least 3 things you find interesting about the world’s population from this app. Extension: Suggest why this might not be accurate.

What do we already know? In pairs, brainstorm anything and everything you know about population on some GOOS. Consider the following: Why might people move to live in different places? How the worlds population has changed? What areas of the world do you think have the most people and the least people and why?

What is population? Key terms: Population means the number of people living in an area. This can be the world, a country, a town or even a small area. Demographics means the study of statistics used to examine the human population. Indicators are the statistics we use to measure a particular thing about a population. For example literacy rate measures the education system of a population. 5 minutes
