Objectives Identify commonly used adverbs. Find ways of using Adverbs meaningfully. Use adverbs appropriately in day today conversation. Value the ability to use adverbs properly.

Adverbs An adverb describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

Adverbs say the following, How? Easily Happily Loudly Quickly Sadly Silently How Often? Always Every day Frequently Never Once Seldom When? After Before Early Now Today Yesterday Where? Inside Near Outside There Home Here

Adverbs Sister makes sandwiches quickly and deliciously. An adverb is a verb helper that modifies and tells us more about the verb. It tells us when, where or how an action takes place

Adverbs of place answer the question – Where ? Where are the toys? The toys are on the floor. Where is Diduni putting the toys? Diduni is putting the toys inside the box.

An Adverb qualifies anything except a Noun or a Pronoun. Ex: Unit Four – Adverbs Grade 11- English Adverb An Adverb qualifies anything except a Noun or a Pronoun. Ex: Sita goes slowly. (Adverb after a verb) It is a very beautiful puppy. (Adverb before an adjective)

The parrot flew exactly over our head. ( Adverb before a preposition) Unit Four – Adverbs Grade 11- English He eats very slowly. ( Adverb before another adverb) The parrot flew exactly over our head. ( Adverb before a preposition) They dislike her simply because she is very selfish. (Adverb before a conjunction)

Polythene bags have been thrown away carelessly. We have worked very hard.

Adverbs of Frequency say how often an action takes place. Ex: She very often walks to the shrine room.

Adverbs of time say when an action takes place. They went to the science laboratory yesterday.

Adverbs of Reason give a reason to the particular action. He cannot come today as he has an examination.

Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding – ly to adjectives. Ex: slowly, loudly, quickly When an adjective ends with – l, we add – ly Ex: carefully, beautifully – y , we remove –y and add -ly Ex: happily, noughtily For adjectives ending with – ll, We only add -y Ex: fully Sometimes, adverbs are formed without any changes in the adjectives. Ex: fast, hard
