GMO Label? By: Colton, Kekolu, Chay

Problem Should GMO be Labeled??

How to Fix Problem We could create a letter and send it to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture). In this letter we could state why we should label GMOs, how they affect humans, and the environment

What are GMOs? A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Usually domesticated organisms in which are modified so that they can benefit humans and In no way benefit the organism being modified.

Why Label GMO? Some GMOs carry allergens. Allergens can pose health related issues to people. Most foods do not carry GMO labels and so you will have to be able to identify GMO foods with out the assistance of a label. For people who cannot read well or do not have the time to look through all the ingredients, this could prove difficult.

What makes Domesticated animals and Plants examples of GMOs? Dogs, for example are a GMO because we have changed them to be friends and protectors rather than just wild animals. Plants are modified and are now domesticated so that we can eat them or use them for our own needs, an example is to dye material.

The letter to the USDA Dear, United States Department of Agriculture This letter that my classmates and I are writing concerns the future health of America. In our biology class, we were given the question “Why should Gmo’s be labeled? “ After further discussion, my team discovered some hidden truths about GMO’s and how they can affect the human body. Through thorough research, we learned that some GMO’s carry allergens. Allergens can pose health related issues to people. Most foods do not carry GMO labels and so you will have to be able to identify GMO foods with out the assistance of a label. For people who cannot read well or do not have the time to look through all the ingredients, this could prove difficult. Another reason that we believe that GMO’s should be labeled is because some people strongly believe that GMO’s kill you. Using modern technology to make GMO’s involves using a gene gun or injection. After that we spray pesticides and other unnatural substances on the plants or animals (which ever is growing) to kill things around the GMO that is being created. Non of this sounds healthy for the human body, and many people across America believe that GMO’s are severely harmful to you and the environment. Dear United States Department of Agriculture, we hope that you take our sincerest advice and opinions about this matter. The students of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii’ Colton, Kekolu, and Chay.
