Unit 4 SAC 3 Revision

DFAT-role of the Australian Government’s aid program. Examples include: Australia provides material goods such as food, water and shelter in times of crisis. Australia provides technical support by sending engineers to developing countries to assist with infrastructure development. Australia provides education relating to better agricultural practices.

WHO Describe the World Health Organisation (WHO)? The World Health Organisation is part of the United Nations and works to promote global health by providing leadership on global health issues and resources and support to countries that need assistance to improve the health of their citizens. Outline the six point agenda to improve public health.

Agenda of the WHO Penguins Eat F I S H

Penguins Promoting development: The framework itself is a way of promoting development. Specific areas of the framework include addressing the most vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups such as the poor, homeless, migrants and members of ethnic minority groups, addressing the special needs of migrants, undertaking screening for active TB and latent TB infections in high-risk groups and provide appropriate treatment to manage outbreaks; ensuring continued surveillance and programme monitoring and evaluation.

Eat Enhancing partnerships

F Fostering health security: Examples include: ensure funding and direction for planning and health services of high quality, undertaking screening for active TB and latent TB infections in high-risk groups and provide appropriate treatment to manage outbreaks, invest in research and new tools and support global TB control.

I Improving performance

S Strengthening health systems: Examples include ensuring funding and direction for planning and health services of high quality, addressing the special needs of migrants: cross- border issues, undertaking screening for active TB and latent TB infections in high-risk groups and provide appropriate treatment to manage outbreaks, optimising TB prevention and care and ensuring continued surveillance and programme monitoring and evaluation.

H Harnessing research, information and evidence: Examples include ensuring continued surveillance and programme monitoring and evaluation and investing in research and new tools.

Food Security What is meant by food security? The state in which all persons obtain nutritionally adequate, culturally appropriate, safe food regularly through local non-emergency sources.

United Nations What is the role of the United Nations? Describe their areas of action. What is meant by human rights? How is this used in developing countries?

UN Core Functions Peace Helps Human Develop

Human Rights Provide two examples that represent human rights that the united nations works to protect. Human rights relate to the conditions and entitlements that every human being is entitled to regardless of their race, age, culture, religion, country of origin, sexual orientation or any other characteristic.

HIV/AIDS Describe an HIV/AIDS program that could be implemented in Papua New Guinea Evaluate this program in terms of elements of sustainability. How might this program contribute to global health?

Water and Sanitation Describe a water and sanitation program that could be implemented in a developing country How could this program contribute to sustainable human development?

Emergency Aid Outline what is meant by emergency aid. Emergency aid relates to providing resources in the short term to sustain life such as food and water. Identify two situations in which emergency aid may be provided. Earthquake, drought, conflict, bushfire flood

Emergency Aid Explain how emergency aid can improve health status in developing countries. Providing food can assist in keeping people alive, which can increase life expectancy. Clean water can reduce the prevalence of infectious diseases such as cholera. Having access to health care means that some conditions can be cured, this can reduce the under 5 mortality rate.

Obesity Explain how the changes in the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents may impact global health in the future. Increasing rates of obesity among children and adolescents could lead to an increase in the global rates of cardiovascular disease. Obesity can increase the rates of type 2 diabetes. With increasing rates of obesity among children and adolescents, the word-wide rates of this condition may increase. .

WHO Agenda Using two aspects of the WHO Agenda as the basis of your response, explain how the WHO may work to reduce the impact of obesity in the future. Promoting development – The WHO may devise policies that can assist in reducing obesity on a global scale. Fostering health security – The WHO may assist developing countries in training health workers in relation to obesity-related conditions. Strengthening health systems – The WHO May develop new technologies for combatting obesity-related conditions. Harnessing research, information and evidence - The WHO may provide monitor increases in obesity rates to identify target groups for interventions. Enhancing partnerships – The WHO may form partnerships with governments and the private sector to promote healthy eating globally.

Obesity and Human Development Explain ways that increasing obesity rates could impact on human development in a developing country. Obesity can increase the risk of a number of life threatening conditions. This can impact on the ability of people to lead long, healthy productive lives in accordance with their needs and interests. Obesity can lead to ill health which can prevent people from working. If people can’t work, they may not be able to provide the resources required for a decent standard of living. Obesity can contribute to self-esteem issues which may prevent people from participating in the life of the community.

United Nations Identify areas of action of the United Nations Explain ways that the United Nations may work in situations.

Sustainable Programs Explain the three elements of sustainable programs to evaluate the sustainability of a program.

Non - Government Organisations Identify non-government organizations that work in developing countries. Care Australia Caritas Australia Australian Red Cross Oxfam Australia Red Cross Australia Tabitha Foundation

Besides a food security program, describe one program that a non-government organization has implemented in a developing country.
